Are you using too much gas additive?

I started by just guessing at the 1 ounce per 15 gallons mixture for Ring Free, but I went through a 12 oz bottle long before I had burned 180 gallons of gas. At more than $1.00 an ounce I decided to take the guesswork out of the equation. I first tried a small baby bottle, but it was always lost in the truck somewhere. Then I saw the small 8 oz bottle of Sta-Bil Fuel Stabilizer at the auto parts store and knew it would be perfect. It has ¼ and ½ ounce marks on the measurement tube, which is perfect for my normal usage. I made use of the Sta-Bil in the family vehicles, mowers, and gas can. Filled the bottle with Ring Free and marked the container (½ oz = 7.5 gal) With the Ring Free in the measuring device there is nothing to misplace in the truck. Problem solved.

That's a good idea. I did something similar. I cut the top out of a plastic water bottle. The kind with the squirt type cap on the end. I then poured one measured ounce into it and scored a line on the outside. I just pour it up to the line place in gas fill and twist the cap to release it. Kinda like a measure and funnel all in one.

Question?? If you add too much Ring Free will it make your motor smoke on start up each time you start the motor during the day. I measure out my ring free 1 oz. to 10 gallons. Thanks.

I do not think extra ring free will make it smoke. The smoke comes from the 2-cycle oil. I have read several posts where the dealer never reset the 2-cycle oil after break in at the 10 hr check. The break in setting is 2x the normal ratio of oil to gas. My ring free bottle says 1 oz for 15 gal.

Re: Are you using too much gas additive? (Oldschool)

Your post made me go look at my bottles of ring free. All of them say 1 oz for 15 gallons for constant treatment. My bottles say YAMAHA and were sold at a dealer in Va. I am wondering if yours are of a different vintage, or the geographical location has something to do with it. This is one of those things that make you go HHHUUUUMMMMMMMMMM.....................

So when y'all go out each time, you run all the gas out of the engine? I add a full bottle about once every 4 fill ups.

Re: Are you using too much gas additive? (SkeeterMark)

I usually just add 10 gallons of gas at a time to my tanks and add 1oz ring free each time. If I can't hold 10 gallons I will usually either not use ring free or I will put in 1/2 oz to 5 gallons.

BTW, mine says 1oz to every 10 gallons also.

Ring Free is a yamaha product and you can get it wherever they sell yamaha oils.

Re: Are you using too much gas additive? (AustinTXAngler)

Just to keep the discussion going............I was at my local Yamaha dealer Saturday and looked at all the 12 oz bottles of Ring Free on the shelf (~20). All said for continuous use mix 1 oz to 15 gal. It is strange that several of the posts here on BBC have bottles that suggest 1 oz for 10 gal. Does anyone know if there are different concentrations of Ring Free? Are there geographical differences?

Re: Are you using too much gas additive? (kicker-fish)

I was using Ring Free in every tank and was getting a lot of smoke so I asked my marine mechanic. He said to use it in a couple of tanks a year and the smoking dropped off after I ran out the additive.

Re: Are you using too much gas additive? (gleninaz)

Was it a certified Yamaha mechanic? If a two cycle engine is not smoking then I would be worried. Ring Free (a lead additive) breaks up the carbon inside the engine and purges it out the exhaust. I would much rather have smoke than a gummed up engine. Just my 2 cents..........

I read somewhere RingFree started at 15 gallons per ounce but Yamaha changed it to 10... cannot verify now though, its been months ago... maybe even a year or so...

Re: Are you using too much gas additive? (reelman)

All the bottles I have bought say to mix a 1oz to 10 gallons. I bought a quart last time so I have been using off of it for a while now. Maybe the newer bottles have a different recommended mix.

Re: Are you using too much gas additive? (Bass Junkie)

My bottle reads 1oz/10 gal, but the certified Yamaha mechanic who did my 10 hour recommended 1oz/15 gal. He said that was plenty to do the job, even in my cooler running 4 stroke.
