    shift lever rod

Help. 1978 evinrude 115, great shape except when i shift into forward and sometimes into reverse, it seems that the shift lever will not completely go into gear. After moving several times it works o k for awhile. Looking at blow-up of engine parts I saw the lever has bushings and several parts. Could this be my problem, can this be rebuilt or is this an indication of bigger problems and is this something someone with average (?) mechanical skill could do.

    Thanks for any help.

    Re: shift lever rod (jking)

I would definitely check for any slop from the control box back to the motor, and the bushings in the shift mechanisim, this is common for a motor this old. You can do this yourself, it just takes a little time and patience.

I assume the motor is running and you're not doing this with the motor not running? That is not unusual if the motor is not running. The gearcase parts have to be rotating in order for the dog to mesh with the gears.

You can remove the shift cable from the engine to isolate the control box and cable from the engine. If it shifts fine afterwards then the problem is with the engine shift mechanism or gearcase.

    Re: shift lever rod (Sportwin)

No. I was doing this with the engine off. Did not realize that it would be better with engine running. Thanks for this info.
