Getting closer with the set up!

Still raising the motor and learning how to drive . But I'm getting closer. The chine walk was unbearable at first but each time I raise the motor it gets a little better. Learning how to drive it was a challenge but now that I can "feel" the chine walk start it's getting easier to check out of it. Got it up to 5600 RPM last night so I'm almost there, plenty of water pressure so I'm gonna raise it some more. As soon as I get it dialed in I'll post my set-up numbers and GPS speed.

Will do, being safe isn't a challenge! My first experience with chine walk was with the Viper a few years ago. It was an eye opener . Always have that in the back of my mind so I don't push the limits. Been running the Bee at lower RPM's to get used to the walk and then bumping the throttle and repeating. I can really "feel" when it wants to start now. Set-up is the key issue but learning to drive is really beneficial too.

Almost there. She's gonna be a fast one! Handles remarkably well in rough water too. Really pleased with that. Wasn't sure how it would handle in rougher water but it is a smooooooooooooth ride. Still don't know the speed but I was running neck and neck with my brothers Skeeter powered by a 225 Merc and I still had throttle left. He runs about 70. Still plenty of water pressure too. I've got to get a measurement on my engine height. I've come up a long ways since starting at 3 1/4" below. Gotta get a pic of it running, brother told me there's hardly any boat in the water. Never had a boat that runs on pad like that! Still a handful to drive but I'm inching closer!

You heard any numbers from others as to how high they are running their motors? just curious, seems high to me but I'm used to the Vipers set-up which wouldn't allow me to go too high as I lost water pressure.

Joe my 721 @ WOT hardly has any hull in the water or should say I have to turn my head and look towards the back of the boat to see where the spray is coming from.
WAY back there and the rooster tail is not above the engine. Can't get measurements on mine, Atlas Hyd JP

Joe does your rig take very little trim? IF I go to 1/4 scale on the gauge I have gone to far. Have figured it out now tho I don't have to look and engine set past level is wasting RPM's.

Re: Getting closer with the set up! (EdDavisKY)

Still a lot of trim. And I'm not as high as I thought I was. Only 2 1/2" below pad. Will raise it some more but first I have to get my partner out in it. He really affected the set-up of my Viper and I have to see if it's gonna be the same story with the Bee. From what my brother tells me I have very little boat in the water as of now when I'm running. Do you really get your best results at less than 1/4 trim? Not used to that, with the Viper I had it trimmed up to get the bow out of the water as the bow lift on those boats was non-existent. Still ran it in the 70 MPH range. I've always heard you don't want more than even trim but figured that was with Allisons and Strokers.

Re: Getting closer with the set up! (JoeBro44)

Joe on mine I have found anything over a even motor trim is a waste of gas.
My rig is so touche about the trim I adjusted mine so when properly trimmed the needle on the gauge has just come off the zero mark.
My best results have been with the motor level no higher.
REMEMBER the higher you go with the motor the less bite the prop will have if you get in rough water.
So find the happy medium. If adding your partner to the ratio affects how the boat handles you will probably be to high.
Yes I had a hard time getting used to the little trim required, because my last rig was a Triton which used a lot of trim.
Watch water pressure in turns and find the sweet spot rigged for a T.
Also remember you may need a different pitched prop in hot/humid weather.
I have been running a Tempest 27 and have a 26P Fury on order for hot weather.

My partner is a rather large individual. My set-up on the Viper had a full 3/4" difference between just me and the both of us . I'll just keep playing around with the set-up until I find what works best. Do you set the motor up higher if you're running your motor level?

That is going to depend on a lot of factors in my humble opinion Like time of year,(cold, hot/humid) pitch of prop, and load( live wells full, empty, passenger, etc)
With my Triton I did not have a Hdy. JP and just switched props for time of year, & was running it @ 2 3/4" Below Pad.
Got my Phoenix with everything possible to get on it, because wife said last fling, so get what you want

All I know is that if your rooster tail is higher than the top of your motor you are wasting gas!!
So sounds like you are going to end up with two settings......one for solo or light load and one for Your partner and loaded for T.

When you do figure them out.....here is a tip. Take a metal awl and make a line on your JP at those settings, that way all you have to do is lower it or raise it to the line and not have to measure. Also can take magic marker or blk paint and put in the line and then rub the out side area off and line will be blk & REAL easy to see.

Re: Getting closer with the set up! (mdkeith)

2 5/8 too low for just me, too high for me and my partner . Gonna have two drastically different heights. I just can not get a boat to perform with him in it. Wasn't sure I was gonna get on plane today . Oh well, will do what I have to do. May have to try different props. By myself the Mazco is unbeatable and the boat FLIES though.
