Is there a fix for the fuel gauge problem on our boats? I have a 2000 1710. The problem is the fuel gauge will go from full to empty but there's still over 1/2 a tank.

Yeah... I have one of the bad ones... It reads 1/4 tank when there really isn't any fuel in the tank at all. Found that out the hard way on Toledo Bend last year. Oh man it was a sad day... to have a Cobra towed by a Skeeter!

It's a conspiracy by the oil companies so we keep buying gas when we don't really need any!![]()

I thought I would be on Easy Street by now but somehow I missed the off ramp!
I've been going through the same thing for six months, I talked to several boat dealers and coudn't get any information. I decided to take my boat apart myself and find the problem. The problem is the sending unit; the next problem is locating the sending unit. I have a 2000 model 201, to get to the sending unit, you must remove the seat cushions (bottom portion) then you will have access to an aluminum frame that the back rests are attached to; by removing 6 screws, the whole back rest can be removed. After removal, there is about a 5 inch in diameter hole behind the driver's seat; that's where the sending unit is located. There's another hole in the center portion and one on the passenger side to access the filler tube and the vent tube. I went down and bought an aftermarket sending unit and installed it myself and the problem is fixed. I hope this information is valuable to you guys because I sure went through a lot to figure this out.
Do you remember what brand sending unit you bought to fix the fuel gauge problem? If it worked i would love to put pne in my 96 201.

Texascobra do you have a part number.
no there is no part number. it works for all aplications the chart on the back tells you what length to cut the float arm.you can get after market units at academy.it may not be the same brand but it will also work.
Do you happen to remember what length you cut yours?![]()

yes my fuel tank depth was 6 inches so you cut arm length 4 inches. when you remove the old unit check tank depth with a tape measure.there will be complete instructions on back of package. went to the lake today results were greattttt. :![]()
Would you happen to have any pics? My tank is under the seats too and I hate the fuel gauge problem. I get worried the tank is empty so I put gas in, then it's too full and the gas splashes out the cap. Would be nice to get a true reading.

Did you rreplace gauge also. Where did you buy the sending unit. Thanks
no I do not have pics but it is very simple. no i did not replace the guage. The guage reads what the sending unit registers and the sending unit is the problem. You can find them at any boat dealer that has parts even auto supply stores. I bought one from fun n sun hwy10 hurst tx.

i got a 1999 201 and i replace my fuel sending unit today...my gauge was showing full all the time,so i took the bottom cushions out(velco down) then u will have a aluminum frame to take out, there are 6 screws in frame and 6 screws in the straps under the seat backs.once u get all them out remove the frame and there is a 6 inch hole behind driver seat u will see the sending unit, first unhook the hot from ur cranker battery.then take ur hot and ground wire off ur sending unit.next take the 5 screws out that holds the unit in.i went to my local marine dealer and i bout the universal one that made for tanks 6-24 inch deep...these want work!!30$ wasted.they want fit back down in the hole.so i went to another marine place and they had one just like mine.when u go to put the new one back in, there only one way that the screw hole will line up.so make sure u remember which was the ground was turned when u took it out the bad 1.while u got all the seats out u might as well go ahead and clean them and clean out from under them.after that put everything back in.it sound like a ruff job but it pretty simple.
