    115 etec MAP update / TPS adjustment / other stuff. . .

    Model E115DSLSUC Serial 05160283

I was just informed by BRP that my 115 etec needs a new map update. The last one that I got was in July of 06 which took care of a hot start issue that I had. I subsequently moved, but forgot to update my address with BRP until about two weeks ago. I wrote to their customer support folks when I sent in to change my address and requested them to inform me if there were any new maps available, and they promptly called me back to let me know (didn't really expect them to, so Kudos to customer support).

I'm going to bring it in soon for the MAP update, but I've seen several other issues with this model on the BBC that BRP customer support didn't seem to know about, so I figured if there are some other tweaks and updates that need to be done, I'd get them taken care of all at once. I've found that you folks on the BBC are way ahead of most of the local dealers with respect to particular issues with specific engines.

In addition, my engine has always had a slight miss since I bought it between say 700 and 1100 RPM and sometimes has a very slight off idle stumble which the first MAP update didn't take care of. The stumbling / missing is worst on a cold start for about two or three minutes and after prolonged idling (like when I'm running my crab traps, and go to advance the throttle just to increase speed slightly from dead idle) I have no clue to if the motor is still double oiling, which some people say causes some off idle issues, but I'm only 1/4 of a way through my first tank of oil on my external reservoir. I obviously don't put lots of hours on the boat.

The other issues I've seen on this message board with this engine are:

    1. A TPS adjustment - What's this all about? Do I need to have mine checked out while it's in the shop? Does anyone know if needing this ajustment is causing any particular symptoms like the off idle problems I have?

    2. Throttle cam profile - Mine has the older throttle cam when compared to the pictures posted on the BBC. I don't really have any issues with throttle response, and have kind of gotten used to having a lot of throttle throw on the low end with not much response. I do not however, have alot of reverse throttle. Would the new cam help out with this? I'm guessing that it would, since it looks like it would open the throttle quicker on the low end of things with that newer shape. What's the correct model number for the new cam and is it covered under warranty?

Is there anything else with this motor that I need the dealer to look at while it's in for the MAP and mabey TPS adjustment and throttle cam update if I decide I want it? Any other ideas about the off idle stumble or do the gurus think that the new map and whatever this TPS adjustment is would take care of it?

    Thanks,

    (1) TPS Calibration - Not A Big Deal & Any Dealer Should Know About It.
    (2) Throttle Cam Profile - If it even has the old cam. This was to address some application complaints. Not all boats/motors will need or want the new cam because the responsiveness is different based on load. If it has the old one, update it if you want. I have 3 115 engines still running the old cam with no complaints.
    (3) Latest Map Update
    (4) Just scan the computer for codes & a general check over while doing the above 3.

Your miss may be the engine shifting between modes. Stratified To Homogeneous. You really do not need to know what that means, just that the engine changes running modes.

If there is a future required update BRP will let you know.

    Thanks Aquamarine,

Stratified to homogeneous is the lean burn to regular transition??? I'm surprised that it's as noticable as it is. If you get a chance, if you have a 115 in the shop, or any e-tec for that matter and it's on the flush or in a tank, see if you notice what I'm noticing and let me know. 700-1000 rpms is where it's really noticable. It only aggrivates me because I seem to do quite a bit of running at this speed in no wake zones and running crab traps. I'll let them check it out and see what they think when I bring it in.

On a different note, I bent my skeg on Friday. Nailed something going about 30 mph, and now the skeg is bent about 1/2 way down about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch. What's the best way to strighten it out?

    Appreciate it.

Light heat & 2 very large rubber mallets. You Have To Be Careful With The Heat & Mallets or you will wish you left it alone.
