The old rope measures 3/8" after I pulled it out.
Is this the size I need to replace with or should it be bigger
and has it just been smashed by being wedged in the rail???

Nobody has an answer for this guy
ChampioNman knows...hang on and he'll be along...
If my old memory is still working correctly, I remember that "rope" actually being made of a very brittle, stiff nylon material. If so, I can't imagine how it would compress any appreciable amount.

It's 3/8" polyurethane rope, I got mine at Army surplus, but Lowes and Home Depot carry it, you may need a small flat putty knife to spread the rub rail....
3/8 poly rope. Purchase mine at West Marine. Make sure you use 5200 3m adhesive on screws and tighten all screws before re-inserting rub rail rope. In the winter, it helps to heat up the rub rail with a hair dryer as the rope can be a bear to get back in at the front corners on bow. I did mine las winter and it turned out good.
