    trailer questions

last sept i had an axle break and the wheel came off about 25 mph. no damage to boat but axle was toast and had new axle put on. well i thought i would have no hassle for a whlie but last weekend while in the boat getting backed in i heard ping and pop and thought it was bearings. take off the hub and the bearing scatter on the ground. i'm 2.5 hours from home and 50 miles from nearest auto parts store in little town. lucky for me they had kit so i replaced them in a remote campground. i have bearing buddies for easy greasing but am i the only one with trailer troubles. i go every wekkend and maybe put 2000 miles on those bearing. any no hassle method or breakproof solutions. i am going to keep a spare bearing kit in the boat to prevent being stranded.

    Re: trailer questions (ilovesmallies)

When you get answers, let me know. The previous owner replaced a bent axle and had bearing troubles for the time they used the boat, trailering mostly longer distances to fish. I'm not 100% sure the wheel bearings were maintained regularly or properly. The new bearings don't have the UFP branded type on the trailer anymore and I cannot for the life of me get bearing buddies on the hubs. I used them on all my other trailers. Even if I did get them on, they stick out too far to put the wheel cap on.

Thank you!!!! I will do that. I've been obsesively repacking the bearings manually as I trailer short distances but dunk the trailer often because I do not want to have a problem.

Good grease will solve most issues. http://www.alco-metalube.com/ or try AMSOIL. I don't have bearing problems, just a noisy trailer and brake issues from time to time.

I have read some post on oil bath hubs that's not so good, but I have nothing but praise for mine. Regular maintenance and keep a eye on the sight glass has worked for me. 5yrs

Does your axle have the spindle that you can grease through the end?
