    Motor Options 1997 Champ 202

I took my 202 out to the lake today and ended up sticking a piston in the motor. I am going to get a new motor and have been thinking about a 250 Pro XS, 250 XS Merc Racing, or 300XS. Anybody have any suggestions in terms to rigging and setup? I'm currently running OMC so I know I have to change controls, etc.

Is the 202 rated for 300hp? My plate on my 96 said all V6's but at the time there wasn't a 300 v6, I don't think.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong. That was 10 years ago.

Not a 300 V6 back then but there is now. So get ya a 300 and hang on the back.

But if ya wanna fish tourney most trails a 250 is max allowed.

    Re: Motor Options 1997 Champ 202 (Champer196)

I was thinking about the 300XS with 1.75 Torquemaster lower unit. I'm also going to add an 8 inch rapid jack magnum jackplate and sea star pro steering with the allison cylinder(6345). I'm not worried about tournaments. What kind of prop do you think I would need to start with?

My 202 would do 74 with a stock 225 opti. Probably 250 proxs will get to the upper 70's. Great hull for going fast

Re: Motor Options 1997 Champ 202 (iron banks)

find a 250 XB, (i think there is a good one on the motors for sale board) awesome engine for a small amount of $$$! They were hand built by merc racing and were very strong! i think there is one on the owners lists with this setup that runs in the low 80's. My 97 202 with a 225efi has gone a tick over 78 a few times on gps. I run a worked 27" T-1 prop on mine. let us know what you do and how it turns out, i would love to see some numbers when your done!

250XB is 80 on a 202, 300 should be mid 80's, which gets it right at that fuzzy line of what gearcase to run...

Keep in mind the maximum HP rating for most sanctioned tournaments is 250. When you get ready to sell, it may cut your pool of prospects if it has a 300 on it. Same thing applies if you fish any of the trails.

    Re: (Tx Champ)

250XB is a thirsty motor, even when you keep your foot out of it. High octane required !!! Been there with one on an 07 202. Bullet proof motor though and some mods can be done. Todd at C&O has a 300 HPDI that would sit real nice on it if you plan on keeping it. I'd trade him for my 07 225 HPDI on my 203 but I don't think the $$$ would work out. Remember, the boys at HT can work a Yammie pretty good. Sell ya my 225, warranty till 2013 or you can have them do some magic and I'll buy the 300 from Todd.

My uncle has a Gambler with a 250 XB. The XB does run good. I'm not worried about tournaments or resale. I've had the boat since it was new.

300 VMAX HPDI and don't look backwards at a Merc...

Lots of Torque in those Yammies ideal for moving a big heavy hulled Champ

I would think you could get all you wanted out of the 250 ProXS. Stock motor without mods would fly.

If *I* wasn't concerned about resale or tournament nazis...I'd be calling up Wayne at Hydro Tec, and having him build me a V6 for that 202, and don't forget the "225" decals... Then you can tell everyone it was a special composite hull

    Re: (kris_tx)

Will the factory gauges that I have in the boat now work with a new Merc? I know that I would have to change the trim gauge.
