    Gas Tank Vent....Need Help!

    Hey everyone,
    I have an 03' 206.

Here's the deal. Pulled into the gas station to fill up before a tournament. Turn the key on and it showed 1/2 tank. Go to fill up and it only took 2.5 gallons before it started to spew(sp) from the cap. Looking down into the gas cap, I noticed the gas is bubbling and not going down very easy. Needless to say, this is becoming a big pain in the butt!

Do you think this would be a result of a plugged gas tank vent? If so, were is it located. I'm guessing it's one of the three hull fitting on the driver side of the boat. One is my pump out and the other is my bilge...but what's the other one for? If it's not one of these...then were is it located and what can I do to solve this problem. I can't keep on running with al little over a half tank!

On that model it actually vents threw the gas cap itself.Sounds to me like maybe you might have a bad sending unit.On some of the boats there is a cover right where the center seat back sits. You can try to look threw there and see how much fuel is in it.If you cant see there then youll have to take out the seat pan which sits over the top of the gas tank.If you have any questions feel free to give me a call.

On my 188 I have always had a problem with gas spitting back out when I try to fill quickly. Sometimes I need to go painfully slow to get it to fill without spitting. But I have found if I raise the bow of the boat (either with the tongue jack or park on a slightly sloped hill at the station) I can fill up a regular speeds.

I don't know the problem, but this is waht has helped me.

Try shaking the boat a little bit when you let off the gas nozzle. Sometimes an air bubble with won't allow you to fill it all the way.

More than likely you have a bad sending unit. Taking out the seats and tank cover to access the tank isn't so bad once you find all the screws. I can do it now in about 15 mins. IM me if you have any questions on taking everything apart.

Thanks guys...I'll probably take you up and call or IM you. I have tried to really pump the gas as slow as possible....still bubbles up and spits it out. Dumb question...what does the sending unit have to do with it? Is is something I can tackle myself and replace?

you may have a bend or a kink in your vent hose. It'll fill up with gas and keep it from venting properly. Sometimes shortening the vent hose to eliminate "dips" will help or correct the problem. We have had a cust or two that would take a piece of hose and put it in the vent side of the fuel fill and blow into the tank to clear any puddled fuel and it worked for him. That would also let you know if a "bend or dip" was the problem

What do you mean by vent side of the fuel fill? Is there another hose or opening within the throat of the fuel fill? Can't imagine a kinked or bent hose...I've never worked on anything hose/bilge related to cause something like that.

Similar situation for me...In my '99, I had to turn the gas nozzle completely upside down....If I didn't, it would spew all over the place. Something to do with positioning of fill hose...

The fill and vent are combined into one . The hoses wont be kinked by you persay, but over time some hoses have a tendency to "sag" which would put a "u-shape" in the vent hose. Kinda like a trap under a sink!
