210 Verado Combo

Im taking a serious look at a 210 Verado combo. Can anyone provide feedback. 2007 210 and 2007 275 Verado.

I wouldn't touch a Verado.... WAY TOO HEAVY... your better off with a two stroke

The upside is with the heavier boat that motor will handle it well and be fuel efficient. As long as you're looking for practical and not performance (speed wise) then it would be the rig for you.

the up side is they are very quiet, proxs is loud and rattles bad at 3000-3500rpm, the proxs is great on fuel, these 4 strokes are very heavy engines and i always question over time what that would do to transom area, especially with jp attached. not everyone wants a 4 stroke on back thats is why the boat is still for sale, if you plan on keeping boat a long time then i dont think it matters but resale will be hard if your planing on selling boat in a few years....

I test drove a toon with a 150 verado last year. Toons chine walk to begin with, with the extra weight it was bad. Smooth engine but better for saltwater boats. Stay wiuth the 2 stroke on a bass hull BTW, optis get better fuel economy anyway.

Fuel mileage was supposed to be one of main positives of the Verado but it never came to fruition. They were cool when they first came out because you couldn't hear them idling and you only saw just a wisp of smoke from them. The engines are very heavy and you need a power steering pump installed in the battery compartment which takes up space. Reiterate, they are heavy. There is no significant advantage of owning one over a two stroke. The technology is awesome, just never caught on with bass boat owners. That's why you hardly see them shown on bass boats. If you found a great deal on a 210 w/Verado, I might consider it, otherwise, I'd go with a 250/300 two stroke engine.

OMG I thought it was just me: "proxs is loud and rattles bad at 3000-3500rpm".

My new OPTI 150 does the same, it's obnoxous to me, I purposely stay away from that RPM range so I don't have to listen to it. Sunday I had to stay in this RPM range as the tournament was held on a lake with a max speed limit of 35.

I wished I had ear plugs!

butch, it makes you feel that the engine is falling apart, or least something is very loose rattling around in there, i got rid of mine and dont have to listen to it anymore, got hpdi now, much quieter engine, but the proxs does get great fuel economy...

yep they dont get the fuel mileage that an DI 2 stroke will

My 150 Opti never made that "rattle" noise, much quiter than the 175XS. Then again it only made it about 2 or 3 hours between tear downs before Merc stepped up and we worked out a deal for me to get my current 175XS. Indeed the XS made the "rattle or growl" sound at the low RPM's. I had a 25 Tempist on it and could not turn it to the upper limits. I tried a 24 Tempist this weekend and can turn it to 5870 or so and the "rattle or growl" at 3500'sh is mostly gone. The engine just sits back there and spins, make no mistake it still sounds like a Merc not a HPDI. I've been told the Opti actually holds together better if it is under a load. My current boat runs best not trimmed all the way up so I know the motor is still having to work to spin up to those RPM's. I guess my point is if you are getting that "rattle" and like me not hitting the rev limiter try stepping down one pitch and see if it is smoother. My mechanic told me the "rattle or growl" was actually the fiber reeds in the XS motor and the harmonics of those engines at that RPM range? Personally it just sounded like the old 2.0L Merc engines to me, no big deal either way.

Buzz, I fishing the same trail as Todd when he had the Verado on the 206 if I am not mistaken. TERRIBLE gas mileage, he commented on fuel consumption often! I undersatnd they are better now, but it would have to be a heck of a deal for me with all the good DFI deals out there right now.

TRF, Its appears to me that merc engineers have overlooked NVH (noise vibration and harshness) testing. The motor gets great fuel efficiency, starts on a dime, and idles smoothly. I have a hunch that the noise is air compressor/air box related. A little sound dampening material and counter vibration materials would go a long way to improve. Merc makes a great motor but I hope they offer a fix soon.

FYI:
I would best explain it as raspy, I posted and inquiry in the Merc forum and they replied "its the Mercury Growl"

Shoot Butch, back "in the day" I actually took the lower unit off my old 1977 175 Rude and drilled holes in the exhaust area of it. Man that thing sounded BAD AZZ when it the nose broke over and it cleared the water. Of course back then most were running BIG 115's and the REAL bad boys had the V-8 Rudes or screaming Bridgeport Merc's. Maybe that's why I cannot ever hear what the wife tells me these days.

The veridict is still out on the Merc for me, it's not as "refined" as my old trusty Hammers but so far this one is doing fine. IMHO Merc has that "growl" there on purpose.

I have an '04 198 with a 225 Optimax, my brother has an '05 with a 250 Verado.....I can promise you I will have a 4 stroke on my next boat. He gives up a little fuel economy, but if you average the cost of fuel and oil, we're about equal. Expected engine life of the Optimax - 1,000 hours before major rebuild; average engine life of the Verado - 5,000 hours before rebuild. If you ever run at altitude, the Verado will flat smoke the equivalent 2 stroke.

I didn't think I would ever be a fan........but I'm a huge 4 stroke fan!

Engine noise? If I wanted quiet I would fish out of a canoe on the boundary waters. Then again I refuse to operate anything that does not have a motor on it.

Check with your local Merc dealer and see if they have a Verado certified tech there. That is a different beast and Merc will not let you sell one if you don't have a certified tech to install and service it. Pretty boat but make sure you have local support on it.
