Can someone tell me how I can bypass the neutral switch (so the shift lever does not have to be in neutral to crank the motor).

Side mount controls? You really need to fix it, not bypass it! Thats a really good way to get someone hurt. It's also a great way to launch your boat into a pier!! It's tooo easy to forget that you have bypassed it!!!
Not one to get anybody hurt, but in "The old days" we used to go into the control box, and wrap masking tape around the button switch to hold it in the down position. This would allow cranking in gear to save wear and tear on the clutch dog inside the gearcase. For whatever that was worth, be very careful!! Cuba, Ala. How's everything over at N.A.S. Meridian? I was stationed there in the early 70's. Where has time gone?
