    2005 Champion 198

Hello everyone, I am looking to get a new boat. I am hearing a lot of good things about the Champion boats, and especially about the 198 model. The boat has a freshly rebuilt 225 Evinrude e-tec, not sure why it was rebuilt I'm assuming it's because it was bought from a dealer. But my main concern is the trailer. As dumb as this may sound this might be my deciding factor on the boat. I heard from a couple people that champion boats are a heavier boat. I know the 198 is close to the 20' mark, is it safe for a 198 champion to be on a single axle trailer. The trailer does have brakes and new tires.

When I bought my 206 back in 2006 the 198 came with a single, the tandem axel was a upgrade. Hope that will say something. Although if traveling long distances and curvy terrain, I would rather have a dual axel for it's tracking ability. Look at it like this, less tires to buy.

Yeah I figured it was some kind of upgrade. At least the trailer comes with a spare tire. I do travel pretty far with my boat but I always make sure that the tire pressure is checked and that the bearings are in good shape and greased up. And I like the part were its cheaper on tires lol.

I don't travel across the country much. I prefer single axle trailers. Gary Yamamoto has had his 21' Legends on a single axle since 2006.

He does order them with a tandem and keeps his trailer, then when he sells you get the tandem.

It's all perception, the single is awesome.

My fishing partner has been using his with only one spring breaking . While I was towing it to Clear lake . It actually pulls very good. My 2000 203 also came with a single axle trailer and it too pulled fine . But I did break a spring once with her as well. Check the springs

If a spring breaks on a dually you are almost as equally screwed, just as if you got a flat on a dually. With the spring equalizer system, you can't just keep on going in either situation, as least as far as I know.

But - having just maneuvered mine with dual axles into a really tight garage space I will say I did wish I had a single axle for that, would have been a bit easier.
