    Jackplate adjustment

Hi, i want to lower my motor. Its a manual jackplate. I Just got the boat and its setting pretty high right now. I fish fairly rough water and my prop is exiting the water. what would be a good distance to drop it? I have no idea since i have never dealt with a jackplate before. 1/4 inch 1/2 3/4 1? I want to keep as much speed as i can without chopping air with my prop. Thanks.
