    150 E-tec running rough

Can anyone find out if my engine has had the correct software updates done?I had recent service done and now it runs worse than ever. It lurches and misses badly between 1000 and 2000 rpm and has a strong exhaust smell at idle.
    2007 150,model E150DPLSUF--serial #05153942. Thanks.

Re: 150 E-tec running rough (Springseeker)

Warranty record indicates a claim for a software update was filed in July. The latest software revision for a 150DPLSUF is 93968 and was made available late last month.

In order to determine if an update is needed, we need to know what software revision number is loaded in the EMM now. Do you have a recent Engine History Report?

Re: 150 E-tec running rough (John from IL)

Thanks John. I did have an update done in July but the tech's laptop kept freezing up and he tried it 8 times before he said it downloaded. I was not given a copy of what was done but it was an earlier update to smooth out rough running at lower rpm and at idle.
This dealer is the only one I can find who will look at my engine without leaving the boat for 2-3 weeks and he is 12 hrs. away so I stop in to see him when I am on a trip near him. I stopped in at the end of Sept. and he indicated there were no newer updates. From what you're saying there is a newer update as mine was done in July. Is it possible the original update has not been done correctly?

Re: 150 E-tec running rough (Springseeker)

    That's not likely.

Ususally when the program freezes up during an upload, it "locks up" the engine computer (EMM) too. You have to run a recovery on it, which is very similar to uploading the engine software and then repeat the software upload. So basically, it either works or locks up the EMM. I'm not at work now, but I checked software numbers before I made my previous reply and if I'm not mistaken, the latest update was issued Sept 27th or something close to that.

It's really unusual for an engine to run worse after a software update. Did you notice it ran worse immediately after the update? Or, is this something that's come on gradually since July?

Before I even consider installing an update, I normally check the software info on the "Identity" page of the diagnostic program. If the revision number listed on the dealer download page is a higher number than the one in the EMM, that means its been updated and then I'll update that engine. I also normally save an engine history report before I do any work on an engine as well as one after the work is complete, I also offer copies to my customers as well as keeping a copy in our permanent records. It really makes keeping track of what has been done to an engine really easy.

Don't be afraid to ask your tech to save before & after reports, or request a copy from them. Some of the info on it may not mean much to you, but I can pick a great deal of useful info off of them when something isn't right. If the electronic data appears to be in order (no stored or hard codes, operating temps are in range etc.) then its time to treat the problem like any other 2-stroke and check the basics before moving on.

    Keep us posted...

Let me see if I have this:

    --Engine is updated
--Upload fails 7 times due to problem with computer hosting source for upload
    --Upload finally succeeds
--Engine is running worse after update

The only thing that looks strange in the above is the computer used to do the upload. That might be the source of the problem.

Re: 150 E-tec running rough (John from IL)

Hi John. The engine ran poorly right after the update in that it would only run under 2000 or over 3000rpm. They then installed a new throttle cam which evened things out dramatically. On our last outing I had to run down a long no wake zone and it began to act up on one of those runs.
I've now found a dealer 3 hrs. away who is on the route to my next trip later this fall and he says he will fix me up while I wait. I'll keep you posted,Thanks a lot for your trouble.

Ask Mr. Laws about this happening.

Re: 150 E-tec running rough (jimh)

jimh-That's what I've worried about all summer. It's dissappointing that there are so many dealers out here who will either have nothing to do with you or else do not seem to be fully up on their product.
The engine is awesome except for this gliche whic I'm sure will be a minor fix when I find the right tech.
You're right about the laptop-he said they only use old equipment because the mechs keep dropping them in the dip tanks.

If you fancy a trip South of the Border we may be able to help or if you could talk AL into sending the BBC jet we could visit you.

Hey Rusty! That's not the first time one of you guys has put out that offer and I know and appreciate that they are sincere. BRP should be following this site and sending some of these posts to certain "dealers" around here to show them what service is about.
One day I may just drive down there with a truckload of Canuck beer for you guys!

Hmmm... Maybe if they bought a laptop that worked, they wouldn't get dropped in the tank so frequently.

I asked for a report when I had my last update, he said he couldn't do it. Time for a different dealer maybe.

Sounds like it is time to find a new tech, a Qualified technician can Print or Email the engine report.

Like they say in Down East Maine, "Yah gotta' be smahtah than whatcha workin' with."

I would agree, time for a dealer "upgrade"...

Re: 150 E-tec running rough (TMF)

You may need to ask for the report before the update is done so they can save & print it for you. Even though we save profiles before and after every change we do not print them out all of the time. Why? Most of our customer do not want them. One thing that we do do is export the report to a data directory on our server so it can be printed or e-mailed if needed from any of our company computers. Our labtops and shop has wireless network access to print, save and access the net so it makes it very easy to do this & check for updates while still being connected to the motor.
