I hate to do this but, TO DECARB or NOT TO DECARB?

    E225FPLSSH

I have been reading about decarbing since I joined this site and am not sure what to do. I have owned my Ruds 225 for five years now and to the best of my knowledge it has never been decarbed. Yes, I know it says in the book to do it once a year or 100 hours but, when do men read the book?

My question is: Will I hurt anything by decarbing after all these years of not doing it? It scares the hell out of me! My Ficht is fine and I'd like to keep it fine! The saying goes "If it aint broke, don't break it."

    What should I do?!

    Thanx,

If your scared, why not start by using an additive in your fuel? That'll get the process started for you so it your busting loose a bunch of carbon all at once. After you've been using a carbon cleaner in your fuel, then go with the decarb to get the remaining gunk out. Just a thought...

That is your choice to make. When my engine was produced in 1985 I never, ever heard of decarbing an engine and I doubt if anyone else did either. However, I ran my engine from brand new until 1988. Late 1987 I bought a Grand National and low and behold the boat went on the back burner set in the back yard and rotted, from 1988 until 2002.
2002 bought a new boat breathed new life in my old motor with nothing mechanical, other than water pump and VRO, just electrical parts and she runs like a top and is regularly decarbed for the past three years. But never before.

    Rotsoruck,

Now that's an idea. Sounds like a gradual plan to me.

Hey Dae!! When are you going to let me show you around the Bush River? Also, where you up to the boat races when that terrible accident happened this past weekend?

    Regards,

    Melvin

    Melvin,

I guess most any weekend say is good for a run around the Bush.

As for the sinking and death the other day here at Port, I didn't know what happened until I saw the news that night. When I was crossing over the I95 bridge that day, I say a bunch of boats in a circle. I didn't know what had happened and only assumed it was just people hanging around after the race started or something...

Fred, ChampionMan mentioned this in an earlier post about treating an engine that hadn't been decarbed in a few years, then decarbing. Makes perfect sense to me.

    Dae, sounds logical to me.

Bassmeister, in the post that you speak of, are you saying to go ahead and decarb like it was a regular once a year decarb?

Talking to Fred, he recommends to treat the fuel for a while, then decarb, to keep from breaking loose big chunks all at once.
If I read it right DG said that he decarbed his all at once and not having trouble. I don't know, I just try to do what the techs tell me.

How about switching to XD-100 for a 3 or 4 gallons?

Re: I hate to do this but, TO DECARB or NOT TO DECARB? (jeffnick)

Won't have the same effect as the XD-100 is an after treatment in MYHO. To do a good decarb job on a motor that has never been done a gradual treatment needs to be done. That said, if you have a H20 seperator, pull the filter cover and pour about 1/3rd the can in and then add the rest to the tank. (Seafoam), run the tank close to empty and then fill and add directly to the tank your choice then Seafoam or Carb Guard, or Ring free. Run it then use BRP tuner. Thing is you don't want to do is raise a ring off the locator pin and cause it to hook up on a exhaust or intake port on the cylinder. Once you've gone through this then JMHO on a carb motor Xd-50 on a DI XD-100. The carb motor don't have a recirc line on the oil tank so all your investment goes out the exhaust. $8.00 can of tuner every 100 hrs vs. $30.00/gallon every 4 tanks of fuel for 100, vs $18.00/gallon of XD-50.

    Thanx ChampioNman,
I like the gradual, slow, gentle approach. (kinda like a women) Absolutely don't want too loose a cylinder. Can't see cooking a perfectly good Ficht just to get an E-Tec. That would put a serious hole in the pocket.

Hell, I'd cook my engine if the wife says that's what it would take to get an E-TEC!!

That's to dang early for me. I don't know how you young folks do it!!
Let us know how you do.

I think I might head on down to Hoopers and try for some Spanish Macs around noon.
