Justin Bieber has certainly had an exciting week and it’s only Wednesday. The pop star started off the week by releasing his new single, “Boyfriend,” and then there were reports that an elderly Texas couple wants to sue him for tweeting their phone number. Now, it is being reported that Bieber’s account was hacked overnight.
According to ZDNet, a hacker gained access to Bieber’s verified account, sending out a single disturbing tweet to his 19 million followers. The tweet said, “19 million my ass #biebermyballs.” The site reports that it was quickly deleted by either Beiber’s camp or the one who sent it.
Not only was the tweet sent, but the hacker also started unfollowing some of the 122,000 accounts that the “Baby” singer follows. Bieber’s camp quickly moved to follow the accounts and now Beiber is back up to following 122,914 accounts.
The Sophos security firm later confirmed that Bieber’s account was hacked and that fans should be lucky that the hacker only did it to spread insults. The hacker could have used the opportunity to scam his fans into clicking on an infecting virus by promising free tickets or other offers.
Bieber is just the latest celebrity account to get hacked. Miley Cyrus, Britney Spears and President Obama have all had their verified accounts hacked.
ZDNet notes that when singer Carly Rae Jespen had her account attacked, the hacker also added “#biebermyballs” to each tweet. Her hacker was never identified and it is possible that it could just be a coincidence that Bieber’s hacker used the same phrase.
Bieber may have gotten himself into trouble by using Twitter to prank his fans, tweeting a random phone number that took fans to an elderly Texas couple, who is considering suing for damages.
