    Autism 1 in 88 Now

The CDC today announced that the incidence of Autism in the US has now risen to be 1 in every 88 children. This is twice the number it was 5 years ago!

We as a society need to do something about this. Our kids and families need help! Our government and it's leaders, whomever they are must make this a priority.

    What can the government do?
    I'm not being a jerk, I'm serious.
With all of the current problems in our country and the world, I seriously doubt that they will do anything. ThAt doesn't mean that they shouldn't in some way try to help, but I doubt it.

Are an increasing rate in Autism and and increasing rate in drug use related?

1 in 54 boys. That is a staggering number.

Could the rate be increasing due to more kids being tested and more awareness of the symptoms at an early age?

as an educator of 16 years we have seen the spike in autism, but I think it is related to a combination of factors that have already been stated on here. I think number one is the broad blanket of the autism spectrum as well as better identification. Two, I think people are having children older as well as an increase in drug use, both which impact childhood developement.

I would have to say you're all wrong as for the reasoning. My guess would be advancements in the medical field have made diagnosing autism more effective and accurate. It wasn't too long ago they didnt know how to diagnose the problems of our youth, so unless it was an extreme case like my brother-in-law's, where he is non-verbal, everyone just assumed something was "off" with some kids.

There are many levels now of autism, and a large number of the people diagnosed now are fully functional, but just need some extra help functioning at times. Assuming that the only reason people are being born autistic is because the mother was taking drugs during pregnancy is appalling.

I had kids in class 20 years ago who were diagnosed with autism. The spectrum has been widened over the years to cover many forms of behavior that are now classified as autism. It is a terrible affliction I have much sympathy for those kids and their parents who have the severe cases of it.

Yes it is, if that was my assumption. It's not just the mother who has an input into birth defects, and I didn't use the word only, there could well be many other reasons, however some believe that drug and alcohol abuse is a factor. If the government is serious about helping, they need to put money out there to investigate causes and try to reduce the number.

I have a brother who spent the last 20 years specialising in teaching children with severe autism. His wife has done it for about 15 years. I listen when they talk.

those odds are stacked against the kids.
I have a question about Autism, and i dont want to sound ignorant to it, because i have seen severe cases of it. But how many kids are wrongly diagnosed with this because they are a little hyper, or just not disciplined at home, so they dont know how to act in certain situations?

You will never know. I'm sure the pharmaceutical companies will come out with a pill to treat the less severe cases.

No doubt some have been wrongly diagnosed. Having autism is not a crisis, unless it is in a severe form. I had many students, who had IEPs who were autistic. However their learning and their behavior was fine. Autism has been expanded to cover a lot of kids who would not have been labeled as such in the past.

You are probably right, I believe alot of times a child with issues is diagnosed with this or that to label the problem the child has and prescribe the drugs or treatment. I have three sons, one lives with his mother, last summer when he came to stay with me I began to cut his medication back for a.d.d. ( on doctors approval) we began working on things like Decision making, His drill was when faced with a decision he needed to come up with 5 responses before he acted on any of them. Sorry to ramble, but the point is, he is off the meds and graduating next month.
