gonna pick up another for this weekend. Looking at the $40 or so range. How are the Abu Cardinals, Cheaper Shimanos, or the other spinning reels they have at WalMart? Don't need the best reel there is, just want a well made one that isn't expensive.

look at a at okuma, i dont fish them, but when selling, they were a solid built reel. Little heavy at the time, but that's been a few years.![]()
I've still got a few of the cardinals.... Don't really use them much anymore. But never had any problems with them either. Seemed like a good reel for the $$$
The cheap Abus, especially the ones with an aluminum frame, are pretty good reels. Check out ffo-tackle.com for some great deals from Pure Fishing.

The cardinals are excellent reels for the money.
Also keep your eyes out on here.... I have picked up some killer deals.
I have had a couple of cardinals for a while and they are really nice cheap spinning reels. I bought another one at the local Walmart as they are closing them out here for $30.

When it costs you a tournament, or makes you so mad you're about to throw it in the lake?
Then, it's time to remember....You wanted a cheap spinning reel.
Most of the people I know, That HATE spinning reels. Either own, or have only ever used CHEAP spinning reels.
I was cruising the bottoms one day, checking out my spawning areas, from the truck, just looking for activity. There was TONS of activity.
Rather than drive an hour and a half, I just ran down to a nearby tackle store and grabbed a $50 rod reel combo, pack of hooks, and some horny toads.
1st cast I was hooked up.
The fight was just STUPID, excruciating, difficult, and no fun at all.
I then realized why most people HATE spinning reels. This kind of junk spinning equipment is all they've ever used.
Once or twice, opinion formed, then never again.
I gave it to some guy catfishing from the bank. Came back the next day with my own rod and reel and had a blast.
I think the new secret color is "A-Rig"..........
I was watching a re-run of last years elite tournament on Murray where Casey Ashley won and I noticed him using a cardinal when he was throwing a shake head. So if it's good enough for him I guess It would be good enough me.
I've landed a couple 5+ fish on the Bend with a little 102 Cardinal fishing wacky worms. For the price you cant beat them.

TRUE.......but are a bit more than he was looking at spending.![]()
Not sure I'd base my decision entirely on cost only. I did that years ago & I paid the Price (pun intended). I bought a really nice Pinnacle(pre-buyout) and it was a damn good reel till I dropped it & broke @ reel base. Unfortunately they didn't make em like that anymore & I started switching to BPS & Abu Cardinals. Once I was done with them (Cardinals still decent for the price IMO), I started switching to Daiwa's. I bought 1 Capricorn & loved it. All but 2 spinning reels I have are all Capricorn's now........4 of them to be honest. Other is just a Cheap-O shimano and an older Quantum.
I have 2 Okumas that I've bought in the last 3 years and I really like them. They were about 50 bucks each.Last year a friend stepped on his that was 2 years old and bent the bail.He sent it to Okuma and they sent him a new one no charge,ya gotta like that.
I have a shimano sahara that I use most of the time for my spinning needs and it is great. Kind of looking for more of a dependable backup. Had a Pfleuger Trion that the handle snapped when setting the hook. I also have an older Daiwa something that was inexpensive, but is pretty old.
All our WalMart had was the 101 size cardinal whch seems a bit small. I am having issues with finding the size spinning reel I need for basic finesse fishing. with a 7ft med. action rod.
they also had one okuma I think at about $40. an avenger maybe?

While I was in the process of looking for a $100 spinning reel (from Xmas to end of Feb) I would just read reviews on all the reels no matter what the price ($40-$500+). From everything that I read it apprears for $40 that the Pflueger Trion is the one to go with. LOTS of reviews and most of them very positive. If it were me I would get the Trion.

Very good reel for the price. Dick's did a clearance on then a few years for $17.00 a piece, they are smooth as silk for that kind of money
Stroker DC21 Mercury 250 XB
I don't recall the exact model name of the shimanos they have at BPS; but they're $30 a piece and are great reels.(in clear plastic clamshells outside the fishing counter at the St.Charles, MO- BPS)

A retired guy I fish with; literally......fishes every single saturday and sunday; all day. He swears by them and has yet to have a problem with one. So I grabbed a couple with the same results,....a steal at the price!
