    Garage Door Opener not working

I have a Craftsman 1/2 HP Garage Door opener. When I press the button, I hear a buzz then nothing. In the owners manual, it says to take the chain off which I did, then try it. I hear the buzz, then still nothing. There doesn't seem to be any other ideas in the owners manual.

Any ideas? The opener is probably over 8 years old.

The chain gear on the motor might be shot.

Motor could be shot. Also...a lot of the gearing on openers is teflon. Take cover off and see if any of the grears are worn out. Take the cover off and hit the button...that will usually tell you all you need to know.

Nylon gear may be shot- mine had the same issues. Get a service gut to replace it and you'll probably be good to go. He'll also make sure the track rollers are rolling and lubed and the frame isn't twisting in its mounting.

My Craftsman did the same thing last year. It was the the actual metal rod that comes out of the top with the gear that the chain attaches to had rubbed against the casing and cut through it. Sears had one on sale almost exactly like it, Just bought it and replaced the whole motor assembly for around 110.00 and it came with one new remote (as I really needed one more for my work truck anyway).

After getting it installed found that the newer remotes worked on a different frequency and could not use my old remotes which sucked, I just took the circuit board out of the old one and installed it in the new one, Now all my old remotes work just fine. I took the extra wall mount remote and mounted it next to the door so as I go out I can just push it and now have one at the front and back door.

I had the same problem a couple of years ago. The opener was a really old Craftsman with a chain and my heavy wooden door finally took it's toll... the nylon gears were stripped. I replaced it with a 3/4 hp belt drive and love it! Nice and quiet and very fast going up. Take off the cover, hit the button and check out the gears.

Check the internal drive gears. If they are bad replacement parts are available on-line at a reasonable price and not to hard to replace. Be sure to use the proper grease to lube the new ones.
