Analog and chrome sounds so good!!!

Who remembers when this was a cool stereo?

It has been MANY YEARS since I had this hooked up and kinda forgot about it. We probably all upgraded to "Surround Sound".... oooohhhh ahhhhhh... or we're not old enough to remember a analog dial.

Was moving around some "junk" and saw it and my old pair of Cerwin Vega's (Rock on dude!!!) so I hooked it all up. She has a little static on the volume knob until she warms up. How long has that been since a stereo really needed to warm up to perform at its best?

Observations...
-That stuff is HEAVY!!! The receiver has to weigh 25 to 30 lbs.
-FM radio sounds better on it. I have a nice Kenwood Surround Sound, dolby, blah, blah ,blah and FM radio sounds kinda empty in comparison.

Watts per channel Question:
Do they measure it diff now? The Pioneer (SX-780) says its 45/watts per channel and my Kenwood is suppose to be like 120/watts per channel (with a separate powered sub woofer) and this thing sounds more powerful.

That's a keeper.

Probably still kicks serious keister.
Just cuzz something's new, doesn't mean it's better.

You can tell by watching the going rates on Ebay for "experienced" 2 channel Pioneer, Marantz, Sansui, Rotel, etc. preamps, receivers & amplifiers.

Todays units have the super nuevo signal processing & better phase lock loop tuners, but they have other features you pay more for these days, like discrete amplification.

Not to mention their per channel watt ratings aren't a bald faced lie just to make the spec sheet look all purty-like.

To me, they just make for a "warmer", more full-bodied, truer sound.

Your milage may vary.

I just pulled out my old receiver just like that one and hooked it to the speakers out by my hot tub. It still rocks. I've owned it since. 1980?

A classic. I have a Realistic that still kicks, one of the models made by Pioneer in the 70's. It's in the bedroom with some small Cerwin Vega AT8's.

I love the 'stereo' sounstage. In fact, in the last year I purchased a new Yamaha amp 100 per channel (no surroud, just 2 channels) and re-worked my old Cerwin Vega D3 speakers to get that kcik butt blow you away sound again. Surround just wasn't doing it for me.

I have a Sansui set up. AMP, Equ, Recver, belt driven turn table, double head cassette. Still in good shape ! I don't do music in the house anymore. Just love the peace and quit.

I just hooked up my old Pioner Dolby receiver circa late 80's to my old Cerwin Vegas because the surrond sound went out on the DVD player. Man I forgot how great that sounds and now I have four surround modes with 7 speakers hooked up.

MMMM>.. that looks nice! I miss those. back when bouncing needles = blown eardrums. MOM had an old Marantz unit with a pair of CV 10" towers. I remember seeing those speakers having 2" of travel easily and would flat out knock you over. on Halloween she used to put them on the back deck and you could hear them around the whole darn neighborhood!!!

I bought a pair of CV bookshelf 6" units when I went to college. they rocked the dorm. that was 18 years ago and I now use them as the front speakers on my surround powered by a nice ONKYO system.

Cerwin Vega Speakers ROCK!

Hey! That looks exactly like the one stolen out of Air Force barracks room in 1975! What's the serial number?

Everybody had a Pioneer in their room.

Brings back some SWEET memories I remember hearing the entire album "Point of Know Return" by Kansas , late 70's, at the new stereo store at Fayette Mall.....2 hotties and a buddy with me.......those were the days! I have a vintage Sony from that same era with a turntable on top!

Re: Analog and chrome sounds so good!!! (kickinastro)

I had one of those and the turntable with 10" CV's and 12" Wolverine speakers. I could make my windows shake so hard that you thought they would shatter.

Did you all keep your albums in milk crates? I probably had at least 50 of those completely full of albums.

You are right though, you can't replicate that sound on today's equipment. I prefer it and have a system now that still uses the old technology but with just enough of the new, to keep it all good.
