150 HO broke today (Now is fixed and better than ever)

Well after a late start and the best 2 hours of fishing I have had in a long time(4 fish all over 4 pounds) went to crank up to the other side of the lake, halfway there started hearing a little knock that got louder and started losing RPM's. Throttled back and idled back to the ramp, didnt want to do any more harm than I could to help the techs. Ran it to a dealer on the way home I have never been to, to find some of the nicest people I have ever met, stayed after closing to take a look at it, ran it and the knock was worse, sayed looked like the #5 cylinder was done. They said BPR wants them to do some fuel checks and something with the exhaust cooling line, but looks like it will need a new power head from what he has seen. He said BPR will have one overnighted after he calls them and will be back on the Water by Thursday, cant complain about that. BPR really seems to take care of there customers. I knew I jinx myself on another post when I said I never had any problems, but its still the best motor I have ever had, just letting all you other 150 HO owners know about it. It seemed how can I put this more comforting having read alot of post about similar problems in the past, when it happened, I didnt get pissed, I said i bet i know what the problem is . That is why I thank all of you for your posting on your experiences cause one day down the road its bound to happen to someone else, and having somewhat of a clue what it is is better than not knowing at all.

    Thanks Matt

Re: 150 HO broke today (cfieldbasser)

Its on a 2006 stratos 285 pro XL, running a tempest 24P at only 5100 RPM with no plate its turns 61 MPH on GPS with full tanks and load with 2 people, holeshot is instant. thinking of getting the prop balanced and blueprinted to gain some extra RPM's and then add the jackplate in the next couple of month. Im sure I could gain some more MPH but am happy with where its at so far, will wait for the plate and then I will play around with it a little.

    Thanks Matt

Matt, you will gain some speed and rpms with the jackplate... Might want to get the jackplate and see what it does before getting the prop worked.

Glad to hear about the Great customer Service.

Have you tech check the boats fuel system for restrictions and if you have a remote oil fill have him check the vent.

    Matt

How many hours on your 150HO?

Same type of symptoms my Saltwater 150 showed when it blew.
Taking my new powerhead in tomorrow for a check up.

BRP does not mess around, you wil be back on the water soon.

Re: 150 HO broke today (pioneer197)

Dont know what he checked today rusty, will make sure he checks those two things tommorow for sure. As for the hours, have not checked with the tech on that either, he was pretty busy in a small shop and I could only guess and say 10 hours or under, just talked to the guy who called BRP to order the new power head. I am just amazed on the turn around from BRP, just amazing that a company will go to that length for a customer , another reason it was well worth the wait for this motor. Do you all think i might need a different prop, or with the plate I should be able to turn this 24P at the higher RPM's. And since im new at this, how much would a jackplate be, installed if any of you know? wish the dealer didnt talk me out of the plate when I bought the boat, it came with one stock, The larry Nixon package, yet live and learn.

    Thanks Matt

Re: 150 HO broke today (mjwray)

Matt, your rpms are low at WOT... You can get a 6" manual jackplate for $250-300 I feel pretty sure... I believe I'd go to the dealer that you bought the boat from and tell him how low your rpms are and that you want the jackplate, maybe you can get it at reduced price, maybe free?? After you get it, put the motor propshaft about 3 1/2"-3" below the pad of the boat... Rusty knows how to set one up, and plenty others on BBC as well, Todd Morgan, OneNiceBlazer, etc. Seems to me that the 24Tempest should be fine with the boat set up correctly...
    Good luck,
    Dan

Re: 150 HO broke today (cfieldbasser)

Thanks for the info cfieldbasser, I would prefer not to use the dealer i got the boat at due to bad experiences.(all options not on boat, no help with prop setup like promised, sales guy bailed on day of pick-up after he set the date and time and left the girl who answers the phone to finish the paperwork) Thinking about using the dealer that has the boat now, they have been outstanding, staying late on a saterday just to see if he could get me going agian, and putting my work ahead of others due to warranty. First job i will do is put the jack plate on, seems like it gives ya a-lot for the little it cost, everything else has been perfect, holeshot ,ride, the low noise, and great fuel economy. would just like to get her RPM's up a bit with the plate. cant wait to get back on the water.

    Thanks all, MAtt

Re: 150 HO broke today (mjwray)

If you want the most out of your setup you need to get the jack-plate. I hope you got a credit for deleting that option. If you didn't, then I'd want my jackplate (installed or not). If it came with it, which the Larry Nixon Edition does, I'd have it either on the boat or in my hand.

You have a mid-60's boat with the right setup. I'm not surprised at all by the service BRP is giving you. They are a great company that is going above and beyond in Customer Service.

I have the issue below with a new powerhead on a 150. You may want to have the tech check for this on yours before you pick up the rig. The solution requires sending the EMM back to Evinrude for re-programing.

    1. Software mismatch - My motor model number - on the mounting bracked is suffix C. The code in the EMM was for a series F. Likely the new power head is actually an F series. Any way, can 't download the new F series update because the serial model number says it's a C model.

    Pioneer,

Reguardless of what's stamped on the mounting bracket, how does the EMM know that the bracket is a C series? If anything I would think the EMM would check something on the motor and if the powerhead matched the EMM it would allow the update.

I've been scratching my head ever sense you posted your update problem.

Re: 150 HO broke today (Dae)

    Dae

I left some of the details out. Here is what happened -- to best of my knowledge.

The new power head came with a a new EMM. BRP dowloaded the information/history from my blown power head EMM - including serial number and model number and history.

Seems to me it should have started over with a blank history - but that is not what happened.

The current EMM shows the motor has about 27 hours on it. However about 19 of those hours is on the blown power head. The new EMM must have come with with the F sreires software for the power head - only speculation on my part here, but I don't know how else it could have gotten on there.

So now the EMM sees the motor is a C series, by the model number stored in the EMM and will not download the F series update for power head fimware. Dealer cannot change the model number in the EMM - so it has to go back to Evinrude to be changed. I don't what Evinrude will change. Will they send a new model number sticker ? who knows - will find out Friday.

Now - I cetainly hope the new power head software came in the breakin mode - and suspect it did, based on oil consumption. However when you down load the old history on the new EMM, who knows what happens.

I also wonder what happens when I take this motor in for service 5 years from now to another dealer and it is marked as a C model on the hardware but has the F power head and software. Heaven forbid I have to get another powerhead and all this starts over.

I work in the hardware/software industry - see things like this often. Either the power head replacement proceedure is not fully worked out or some one forgot a step. Growning pains.

Just trying to save this guy with 150HO a possible head ache.

Hoping this my last vist to the shop for a long, long time.
