Any refs or coaches out there who can shed some light on this? My daughter's coach is telling the kids that the 3-second rule applies no matter what. My concern with that is when I see some of the girls not try for a rebound because they don't want to be called for 3 seconds. IMO an offensive rebound situation basically resets the clock.
I told him that in my 40+ years of playing/watching ball, I don't recall a ref ever blowing the whistle for 3 seconds when there's a loose ball to be had. And consider the options: the player stays in the lane, fights for the rebound and MIGHT get called for 3 seconds (a turnover). Or the player bails out of the lane virtually guaranteeing that the other team gets the ball and maybe with a fast break. He remained unconvinced.
