Bad armature. Replace it and it will work fine.

+1 on the armature. If you move the blade by hand and it works again you've got a dead spot. Been there!

    Re: trolling motor question (javelinbill)

It's simple to check if it is an armature problem. Don't need to be on the water. Start and stop motor several times with foot pedal until it quits. If your armature has a bad spot it will stop on it, probably fairly soon. Slightly rotate prop off the dead spot and try pedal again. If it takes off the motor will work fine until it stops on the dead spot again, exactly where it stopped before. I was told MK had a batch of bad armatures. Mine was replaced for free, but I still had warranty. That's a good place to rule in or out, anyway! Good luck!

    Re: trolling motor question (javelinbill)

When I was having the problem I thought the same as you. Took it in and the tech found nothing. Put it on and same thing. I finally stumbled on moving the prop. I must have been moving it by chance and didn't realize what got it to work again. I could get it work by stearing the motor real fast and the water would move the prop off dead spot. You could hit something or move it by lifting on to your deck. I took it to another shop and the guy knew right away about the problem. I don't know if this is your answer, but it's easy to check. Saw the service tech put it in his vice and it did it to him. It's a place to look!

Re: trolling motor question (Rips LEGEND)

does it have a foot control, or hand control with buttons. Sounds like a bad button, mine went bad over the years. The metal connection gets corroded, thus the having to mash it down. I would check that first....its the cheapest answer.

Bill check the underside of the peddle and make sure the bottom side of the switch is pushed back up into the peddle. Look for the two wires then follow them up to the bottom side of the peddle. Push up on it a bit and try again. Sometimes they slip down just enough not to make contact when the button is depressed.

My MK Edge was doing the same thing. I had a frayed wire between the pedal and the bottom plate.

I would see if MK will replace it. If they did have some bad ones you might get lucky. They should know from the serial number.

Very easy to do and only takes a few minutes. I just replace one in my MK edge and I think it was around $70.

Sounds kind of like when my control board went bad in my Maxxum, other possibility might be the reed switch, not sure if the Edge has either of those.

I replaced an Armature in a 65 Maxxum. It wasnt really that difficult, just have to take your time and be careful. I got my parts from Jones TM for less than most of the online parts stores.

    Re: trolling motor question (javelinbill)

When you say you changed the button, I'm assuming you're talking about the microswitch, located under the button. If not, that is probably your problem. don't see many 70's with a bad armature, but can happen.
To answer one of your questions, when you stomp the foot pedal, you're probably moving it also, the sudden movement will turn the motor and the force of the water against the prop will move the armature enough to get to a good part of the armature.
