Is there a Yam tech on here?? Motor bogs down when first running in morning.

I have a 96 Yamaha 40 HP 2 stroke. It has not had any work except regular maintenance in several years. It normally runs about 5200 RPM. Lately it runs about 4700 RPM for about 1/2 mile and then it feels like it "catches on" and jumps to 5200 and runs fine the rest of the day.

Maybe it has something to do with the motor being cold - I don't know. I have run some Yamaha Ring Free through it and some Seafoam which I normally run anyway and also I changed the spark plugs. It still does it. Any suggestions??? Should I just not worry or what?? Thanks.

Do you pump the bulb on the fuel line til its firm before you start each morning? You might try that.

Had not thought about that. Good suggestion. I will try it. Thank you. I like to try simple things first. I have had the little boat about 3 years or so and never really had to pump the bulb unless I unhooked it for some reason. I usually take it out maybe 4 times a week or so and I guess it stayed pumped but things might be changing for some reason. I will give that a try tomorrow if I go fishing......and I can remember -haha.

Definitely do this. I have a 96 40 Yamaha myself and if I don't prime the bulb when I back it in the water it runs rough and is hard to start.

Pump the bubble until it is firm and it runs like a brand new motor.

I did the bulb pumping thing this morning and it still did the same thing....Runs slow at about 4700 RPM for maybe 1/4 mile and then it feels like it kicks in and immediately picks up to the 5200 RPM and runs great the rest of the day.....Any other ideas anybody ???

That sucks. You might try checking the fuel filter or water seperater if it has one. You can't trust the gas these days. I'm not a mechanic by any means, but trying to make simple suggestions. Hopefully it all works out for you and does not wind up costing an arm and leg.
