    hydraulic steering (sea star) 250 sho

    just had my triton repowered with new sho, got back from dealer to start break in and i now have play in my wheel at about 4500rpm's! I took out water and re bleed the steering lines to get all air out and its still doing it, seems to be sticking once motor is trimmed up and running at around 4500rpm's it starts and i look back at motor while driving and i can whip the wheel back and forth and the steering ram wont be turning but when i slow down it seems to go away. What makes me so angry is i cant figure out whats causing it. do i need a new ram or steering helm or do's anyone have any idea what could cause this problem?

    What was your original set-up before the repower, engine year, hp, etc., vs. now...?

    hello, thanks for replying to my post about my steering. my previous set up was a 2003 mercury 250xs and i repowered to a new yamaha 250 vmax sho 4 stroke. didnt have this issue before and my lines have been bleed off. once on plane an start trimming up it becomes non responsive as you can whip the wheel a short distance to the left and right and the ram wont move bit when i slow down the play in the wheel go's away. it only do's it when on plane and trimmed up over 4000 rpm's

    I would take it to a dealer that has the Teleflex Power Purge Jr. bleeding system and have them bleed it for you, When done correctly this is the best way to get air out of the system. When running high up with air in the system, the air is compressed by engine torque (linear force) putting hydraulic pressure against either of the non-feedback check valves in the helm. In this situation, you have to further compress the air to "unlock" the check valve. Try this.

    Its sure do's sound good but there is only one problem i dont know anybody that has one of those purge jr tools to do this. My local mech just done the regular procedure almost like leeding breaks on a car. i will ask around to see if anyone has this tool? in my earlier post i posted the model number of my steering ram to see if maybe that was the problem. being that it worked great with my mercury and now im with a yamaha was thinking maybe there was a difference but i guess not.

    I looked at my Teleflex applications guide last night. It appears that your new motor can use the HC5345 that you have OR the HC5358 cylinder. Call Teleflex Tech Support to get clarification on which part number you actually need. If you need the HC5358, don't worry, your HC5345 can be modified to work. If that's the one that you need give me a call and I can get you fixed up.
