    Pro V 150 that wasn't winterized?

My bone head brother and I were talking yesterday about the upcoming season when he realized he never winterized his boat. My question is, what is the process, and what all should be replaced before we take it out this year? I always have mine winterized, but he keeps his up at Erie, and said it just slipped his mind. Anyway, what should I tell him needs to be done, as I am not a mechanic by any means, and have no idea of all of the possible problems this caused. Cross your fingers that he will be lucky.

Personally, I would get it inside a heated garage somewhere and let it warm up. If there is any water in the lower unit it is probably frozen. After it has had time to thaw out go ahead and drain the lower unit and let it settle and check for water. If there isn't any(or very, very litte) you're probably OK. If there is a lot of water in it then there is a chance that it could have frozen, swollen and cracked the case and you may need to pull it off and have it pressure checked. As far as the powerhead, I would just do as you would have in the fall (assuming that you already have Sta-bil in the gas). Pull the plugs, fog the cylinders, and turn it over a couple of times with the emergency cutoff cord removed.
If you didn't have Sta-bil in the gas, then I would recommend getting some Seafoam for your fuel tanks as well as Sta-bil. The Seafoam will work like dry gas to take care of any water that may have resulted from ethanol and the Sta-bil will help to keep it fresh. In this case you'll need to run it for a while to get the Sta-bil into the entire fuel system before you fog it.

Thats kind of what I figured. Hopefully the lower unit is fine. Thats would be a costly whoops!

all that he said above,,if its busted you will probably have a nice puddle underneath it if it really froze,,if theres alil bit there might benn some water in it still that pushed some oil out,,either way when its above freezing def drain the lower unit ,and spray some fogger in the cylinders to lube them up

    Re: (Hometownhandyman)

I posted this in another forum and like 3 guys all said he better start looking for a new outboard. I know that is possible I guess, but is it likely that anything that awful would have happened to the outboard?

If there was enough water in the lower unit that it froze and did any damage its junk anyway. If there was nothing done to the fuel then I would drain the fuel and start out with new fuel. If it were me I would run this fuel in my truck or car so it wasnt wasted. Car or truck engine less of a problem with fuel quality. As far as fogging the motor now why if there was damage due to rusting cylinder wall or crank journal its already done. This is a very small risk. Heres another deal about what I read above when you put it in a warm garage there will be alot of condesation as it warms up this will cause more damage that doing nothing at this point. Dont take me wrong I think it is a very good idea to winterize boat and engine but I have also forgot to do the engine and have never had trouble because of it. When its time to winterize its also time to pick up the Bow or gun so sometimes thetime gets away from you. Change the lower unit oil and the fuel and run it. No worries.
