    Am I slow

or honest? Over and over I see people with 150 horsepower motors running low to mid 60s, yet, my Pro-V 150 with a 23M prop on a 19' Viper Cobra will only run 59 (GPS) at 5800 rpm. Is that because of the gear ratio of the Pro-V, 2 to 1 versus 1.87 to 1 of other motors?

First off, Tom...it's extremely difficult to read your posts with all that movement on the left hand side of the page.

Are they all running Cobras? The boat hull and weight have a lot to do with the speed, as does the prop and set-up.

Tom I've got a 99 Vmax 150 on a ZX185 (18.5) with a 25m and I run anywhere from 61 to 63 GPS at 5500 - 5600 depending on load. I think you would see low 60's if you went up in prop pitch. Just a thought.

A lot will depend on your load and where it is in the boat. Front vs back.
Move most of the weight to the back of the boat.

Sorry for the distracting icon... LOL.

Yes, a 25 pitch prop is a possibility. The weight shouldn't be too bad up front. 90% of my tackle is in the front center compartment, rods on the left, life jackets and misc stuff on the right. In the back is the oil tank, 2 group 30 batteries and the cranking battery.

Move as much tackle to the back. You may be having to over tirm to get the nose up.

I'm in the same boat with you Tom, 19ft Bee Line, I've got a 23M and a 25 Power tech and they both seem to run about the same. 59mph @ 5700 - 5800.

Cobras run real flat as it is but I get ok lift. This is almost full up trim, 2 guys with all fishing gear, half a tank of gas

From what I've heard, Cobras are fairly heavy boats, kinda like a Ranger. Alot of my buddies that have 18ft Rangers w/ a 150 are seeing 58-60mph. That same motor on a Skeeter can see 62-64mph. Alot depends on load, and weight of the boat itself.

My 150 proV will push my old Ranger just a hair over 61mph GPS with a worked 4 blade 23p "BIG IRON" prop at 5800 rpms. I'm guessing my boat is a bit lighter than yours since it's only 18' long.

    Re: Am I slow (TomM)

I run 61 to 63 with a worked 25M. About the same with a 4 blade trophy, 59 with a 23M. With the 23 it runs 59 with one or two people and the 25 and trophy loose a couple of clicks with 2 on board. With the 25 I can raise the engine and run 64 to 66(cool weather) but the mid range is better lower.

    Re: Am I slow (jcdogfish)

Yeah, I think a 25 will be my answer. I've got a 24 pitch TRO4 in the garage and I'll have to get some pics of it and see if I can find a trade.

    Tom,
What lakes do you go to? You ever want to meet at blue marsh or beltsville. I have a 24 Fury you can try. Not sure what hub you need but if you can borrow a Hub to run a merc prop might be worth it. Let me know.

    Joe,
The guy I bought my TRO4 from was running it on a 175 Merc and it goes right on my Yamaha.

Yes, I fish Blue Marsh on occassion, not Beltsville. If the prop would fit I'd like to try it out. Thanks for the offer.

Tom, I ran a 24 Fury and it would jump out of the hole and rode on a rail, but only gained about 1 mph...Just didn't seem to want to spend the money for 1mph.

    Re: Am I slow (secdawgs)

Interesting. Kind of a shame though. I would have thought it'd be a decent trade off between the 23 and 25 and you would have gained a bit more. I'm still leaning towards a 25M. I fish by myself most of the time so the 25 would probably be great, then when I do fish with someone else, throw the 23 on there if I need to.
