    Toasted Voltmeter

The 5 year old OMC volt meter in my boat died recently. It reads about 10v when disconnected, and 18v when 12v is applied to it. I checked the connections, and verified the voltage with a digital volt meter.

OMC / Bomb volt meters are pretty pricy here in the frozen north. Does anyone know of an on line or mail order source that might be less? How about other brands like Teleflex? My boat has a few years on it, so it doesn't have to match the others exactly.

    Thanks

    Pete

    Re: Toasted Voltmeter (basn4fun)

I just toasted my second voltmeter with the exact same symptoms in 4 years. Is there something that goes wrong with these or is it something in the electrical. I was running a FICHT and am now running an ETec, so not sure why it would happen on 2 different motors with the same result. Meter reads 10 volts with no power and up to 18 with power on???
    Any ideas???

Make sure you are using SS lock washer and nuts or nylon insert nuts on your cranking battery. Man almost a 4 year old post? And that guy brought his boat down from CT for me to fix it 900 miles but gas was cheap. .

Ya was the closest post I could find to my problem. I think I am going to go with a good quality voltmeter, non OEM and see how it lasts. Just do not trust the BRP after 2 of mine with this issue and at least one other person out there, something seems to be a problem with those gauges.
