Running down the lake yesterday with my buddy when his 2005 225 Hpdi just shut down. He pointed to his volt meter gauge and said it had dropped to 0, then the rpm gauge quit working, next the trim quit and 30 seconds later the motor sputtered and quit. Called a marina and they said it was battery. He bought a new Optima start battery and we dropped it in. When we hooked up the positive and negative cables the motor started smoking right below where the fuse box is located on the engine block. Called back to the Marina tech and he said that is was either the stator or rectifier under the fly wheel and we were finished for the weekend. Can anyone shed some light on this. He is taking it in on Monday.
