    Blown Yamaha VMax

I've got a friend who has a Yamaha 225 OX66, and the top left piston (#2 I believe) has melted. The cylinder wall was covered in melted aluminum. We pulled the heads and found no other damage in any other cylinder. A nice coat of oil was on all cylinders, except #2.

Looking for the cause of the failure, I pulled the poppit valve and found no trash, pulled the lower and found no wear on the impeller. So, it doesn't look like a cooling problem but rather looks like an injector failed.

I own a Mercury and haven't had any dealings with working on a Yamaha and I want to make the right diagnosis, but am I correct in assuming when an injector goes bad or runs lean on this motor, this is what happens to it's cylinder?

Also, where can I send injectors to be cleaned and flow tested?

    Thanks,
    Erk

Mark injectors with corresponding cylinder number and send to Tony and Linda Brucato.
Follow instructions on their website for injector service. http://www.Brucatosvs.com

Re: Blown Yamaha VMax (Big Erk)

Inspect the reads for that cylinder and piston rings if possible.
Back in 04 my vx225 detonated by ingesting water though exhaust plate. Before it blew it was under warranty and Yamaha service mechanic found loose bolts and bad gasket but the damage was already done to 3 and 4. I noticed a serge on higher rpms only when I ran in rough water or hit a bigger wave.
It’s unlikely to have a lean injector but not impossible. Most Keihin injectors will have a flooding condition when clogged with contaminants. This causes the injector pintle not to close completely allowing excessive amount of fuel into the cylinder. There are few instances where injectors will become lean and must be replaced. A clogged injector filter will definitely lean out the injector. Another word of advice is that a high flowing #1 injector which the o2 sensor is reading of will cause the ECU to lean out all other injectors.
Linda and Tony Brucato flow test each injector individually to one hundreds of a gram and will provide you with detailed and comprehensive report for the whole set. Their service is second to none.

    Re: Blown Yamaha VMax (JUST-IN-TIME)

Thanks for the advice. I may not get the chance to tear it down and do more troubleshooting now because the guy that owns this motor is looking at repowering with a new Yammie. Now I have been assigned the task of finding him a new 225 or 250 at a good price but I have no clue about where to look. Haven't really found any dealers who list motors for sale online so I guess I'll just have to get a list of dealers and call or email around.

Agree with using Brucato. All six of my injectors were flooding, but Brucato was able to restore them to spec. Much smoother running, stronger acceleration, and less gas! Very professional and easy to work with, not to mention fast turnaround.
