I had the motor in to change lower unit oil and run it a bit on the earmuffs... the guy saw some water escape for upper part of motor while runnig it. I also noticed some water escape fron where the motor cover connects when I ran it before. Is this a gasket? He believes it is. Thanks for any help.--It's a 2001 3.1l YAM 200.

Yes, sometimes it's a gasket, but it could also be that the water jacket bolts need to be torqued.
check for loose water pressure hose or fitting as well as the pee hole hose

I had the same problem when I winterized my boat last fall. Found that the line for the water pressure gauge had rubbed the motor cover a created a small hole in the water pressure line. If this turns out to be the problem you will need a 5mm compression connector for the plastic line if you have Yamaha gauges and the white plastic line.
