I was told by an indiviual that the two cycle oil at Wal-Mart is the same as Yamalube. He said they take bids from different manufacters and Yamalube won the bid. Can anyone comfirm this?

I don't know about that. I think I will stick with buying my Yamalube...

Yamalube is made by Citgo. First case I bought had both in it Yamalube and Citgo. I would not use any Wal-Mart brand oil unless I knew what was in the jug. It just does not pay to use cheap oil in a $$$$$ outboard.

oil is oil I thought. I have a 225 Vmax and use havoline and have had no probs. I think people get too carried away with oil. Unless your motor calls for Synthetic, which I think Opti Max may be the only that does, I dont think it really matters. TCw-3 is all motor manufacturers call for so I would think that would be more important than something that says "Yamalube", just my opinion

    Re: Wal-Mart oil (ncz20)

The wal-mart oil is made by shell. Here is the NMMA cert link.

    http://www.nmma.org/certificat...32006

All petroleum oil is BASICLY the same. Now before you all get your panies in a wod, stay with me here. The difference is the refinment process and more so the additive they put in it. Generally they oil companies are going to charge more for the oil they spend more money on refining and pass the cost of additive onto the customer. With that said I would not go buy the cheapest stuff out there. I used to work in a parts store and our house brand oil was made buy Texaco. But it was not the same formulation as Havoline (texacos brand). The House brand was about 20 cents cheaper per quart.

    Re: Wal-Mart oil (nosaj2)

TCW-3 is enough... the ONLY real choices are pure synthetic and any other oil... its all about the money (theirs, not yours)... in a similiar vein... Consumer Reports after decades finally got around to testing auto oil... and wait, heresy... "any oil every 5,000 miles will do"... I use Wally oil for everything and change it 2x a year in the lower unit... had one Yammy 115 for 13 years after buying it 3 years old... no problems... now my 200 Yammy is treated the same... a can of Sea Foam 2x a year plus new plugs and forget all the tedious comparisons that never end... may be all wrong but that is my 2 cents after 26 years of bass boats.

Been using Wal-Mart 2 cycle oil since they have been in my area, I own a landscape maintenance company and have never had an equipment failure due to Wal-Mart oil. Use it in everything, vehicles, equipment and Yamaha VMAX, eight years old and still running strong.

    Re: Wal-Mart oil (SkeeterMark)

Here is the way it was explained to me after I blew the powerhead, using Wal-mart oil. All the oils are TCW-111 approved, however the name brands (yamahalube, Mercury, Johnson/Evinrude) are all rated at the high end of the scale and Wal-mart oil is rated at the low end. This was from a company that does the analysis of all the oils...I would stay with the name brands....

    Re: Wal-Mart oil (suzuki_man)

Just curious suzuki man, did they[ whoever they is] tell you it was a failure with the oil that caused this? If it was covered under warrenty did they refuse to fix it because of the oil? Last can you post where we can see this comparison chart? not trying to start an argumenent over oil, just curious.

    Re: Wal-Mart oil (SWayne)

Am not buying that! Use what they say until the warranty is over... then any TCW-3... what good is TCW-3 standard if its not a standard used on what it says on the label??? I think some dealers scratch for any baloney they can get to make $$$... one dealer here replaced my Faria gauge (full charge)... then I found out from Faria that all their gauges are lifetime warranty... another dealer could not even follow the built-in line for running troll-ducer wires so it crimped and blew the unit... I ended up doing the replacement wiring myself... maybe I am just a skeptic but since its the owners $$$, check other sources whenever they want you to reach for your wallet big-time.

    Re: Wal-Mart oil (SWayne)

When I blew up my motor, it was a result of a clogged check valve in one of the lines that go to the cylinder. Suzuki runs seperate lines to each cylinder for the oil injection. Anyway, I contacted the company that was providing Wal-mart oil at the time, this was back in 1991. The rep informed me that while a oil may meet the engine manufacture warranty, and TCW-III specififications, all oils are NOT they same. Now to answer your question, I do not remember the company that I talked with. And I'm sure there are stats somewhere available, I just would have no idea where you might find them, except maybe to contact an oil rep. You get what you pay for in everything including oil. Sorry if I mislead anyone, just stated what was told to me.

    Re: Wal-Mart oil (suzuki_man)

I still think oil is oil. If none of it voids the warranty (except maybe Opti Max, but it calls for synthetic) then obviously it is good enough for the manufactures. Love havoline cant gripe on it any

    Re: Wal-Mart oil (Yama225)

Fact is that a manufactor can not require you to use a certain brand of oil to honor a warranty. As long as a oil meets the standards set by the company (TCW3) then it can not void the warranty. Now with that said I still think that some are better than others and it may get you through the warranty. But after that you are on your own and I would want the best stuff I could afford.

I have to agree with you on dealers ripping you off. I showed my dealer my shop manuel he said I dont have one of those. He is not allowed to play with my yamaha at all. I wil purchase the software for my laptop if I need too and learn exactly how every thing works and I live in a big city with alot of boats. Rico!!!

    Re: Wal-Mart oil (55excl)

This is my experience with Walmart TCW3 2 stroke oil. A friend of mine ran this oil only in his 150 2 liter Mercs. He fished saltwater mostly and the boat would sit for 1 to 2 months at a time. One eng thru a rod due to a rusty rod bearing failing. The eng was very rusty inside. I pulled the oil gear shaft out of the other running eng and it was rusty also. Now, he never fogged these engs after running in the ocean and sittin a couple months, but the people I know who ran name brand oils treated their engs the same way and never had any rusting problems. As far as fresh water use the Walmart oil is probably fine to use I guess. To me though it definitely is not as good as Merc oil or Yamalube. I run the Pennzoil syn blend or full synthetic in my old Merc, its a decent oil for a reasonable price. I agree, some Marine things are way overpriced. There are many "aftermarket" things that are just as good as brand labeled things. The trick is to weed out the junk stuff. To some people this isnt worth the risk so they stick with the Brand stuff. Me, I'm cheap. If something has proven itself to me, I will take the bargain every time.

    Re: Wal-Mart oil (stan)

Hey Stan, I had a place in Fla. near the beach and that salt air ate up my aluminum screen doors, I know aluminium won't rust but salt will do something to it to deteriorate it , so I am guessing that was what happened to your friends motor. One more example for Wal-Mart oil and I am through. I have a friend who had a 93 Yamaha Pro-V and this guy is tough on his stuff. He used Wal-Mart oil from day 1 and never had a problem with this motor. He sold the boat and motor a few weeks ago and it was still running strong and as said in my other post I use it in my Lawn maintenance business and my equipment is run hard so I'll stick to the seven dollar a gallon stuff and leave more of the 20 to 25 dollar a gallon stuff for all you other guys.

    The Wal-Mart oil syndrome

I have read and heard wild stories about oils of different sources and even outboard brands... but they do not bear up when carefully examined...
then it was Kipawa props, man I get tired of these folks who just can't compete without trashing the competition when its near impossible to confirm allegations... its just to spook people off of certain brands...
its all about the $$$... markets and communication are just too intense for foolishness to avoid exposure very long... my 2 cents.
(sort of reminds me of the late 80s when my PC friends trashed Apple's mouse as " a waste of desk space" when these dimwits where memorizing PC function keys for a living... go figure)
