Hey guys. I've been looking around the board the last couple of days, and thought I would sign up and introduce myself. I purchased a 1989 16ft Traveler late last year that has an '81 DT85. I've been working at getting the boat water worthy for a few months now. All I need to do now is get the wiring done and find out what is wrong with the motor.
I bought the boat from a guy I work with. The story behind it is, he got it out of the shop and took it to the lake. The boat was in the shop to have the water pump replaced, and the mechanic told him he would fix the "clunking" sound it made when it went into gear. He went to put the boat in gear and it would rev, but not go anywhere. Forward or reverse. This guy is handicapped, and didn't want to fool with it anymore, so he went and bought a new one. Now I own his old boat and hopefully, will be fishing out of it real soon.
Any thoughts as to what may be wrong in the bottom of the motor to not go into gear?
