    2001 Mercury 175 EFI - HELP!

Hey guys I am new to this forum....I didnt even know it was out there till this morning....There is sure alot of information here. It is great!

I just got a new boat and I couldnt get it started at the dock becuase it loaded up (flooded) and finally I got it started and going and it ran good. then after it sat for about 4 hours we were ready to go. It started right away, but I let it idle for about 2-3 minutes while we finished pulling up and it did it again to me, the last time it took me probably an hour to get it working.

    3 questions...

    1. Do you think there is something wrong with the motor or should I just not let it sit there and idle that long?

    2. Also is there some trick to starting these things so they dont flood?

    3. The throttle on the control box did not rev the engine at all...is it possible a cable came loose? Does this need to be fixed by a tech or is it something I can do?

Thanks guys...I look forward to reading all the stuff on this forum.

Welcome to BBC and congratulations on the new rig. I'm not a tech, but can relate my experience and the advice from this forum I've read and followed. The techs will need the motor serial number.

Something is definitely amiss. Read the following post about fuel delivery problems and remedies (sounds like this sort of thing to me, however , , ,) and do what it says to do. There are other possibilities, but first thing first. Even if these steps don't prove to be a fix, they're not real costly and you'll be ahead of the game for doing them.

I'll let others speak to this.

A check you can make is to remove the cowling and watch where the cables feed into the engine, spin the prop by hand while someone shifts into gear (don't know whether it matters on this engine, but it's important on some) and works the gas lever. You should be able to see whether the cable is still attached and if moving the handle works the fuel linkage. Possible the problem is in the control box. Also, I know it sound odd to ask, but does the boat have a hot foot?

Unless you're certain the water pump impeller and spark plugs were changed recently, now would be the time. And just for drill, I'd look at the compression.

If you're handy mechanically and have a reasonably good set of tools, with the guidance of a Merc Service manual and the good info on this site you can make these sorts of repairs.

    +1 to the above suggestions.

    Welcome to BBC!

    On your starting question:

    -Pump Primer Bulb FIRM
    -Turn Key ON
-Turn key to START. That's all that should be required on your EFI.

    Regarding your THROTTLE question:

If your boat is equipped with a HOTFOOT (foot throttle), the throttle portion of the shift control WILL NOT FUNCTION (at all).

    Thanks for the help guys.

I looked at the fuel line and that is not the issue, so that is good news.

I think maybe I explained the throttle situation poorly.....

It is not the throttle that makes the boat speed up. slow down.

The throttle I am talking about is the one with the engine in neutral and you lift the lever up and the engine will idle faster. Maybe I should have said that better.

I'm thinking your talking about the fast idle lever.

    Re: 2001 Mercury 175 EFI - HELP! (taeheel2az)

maybe I am wrong about the fuel line but...it is black, has the word Lawrence on it with some other numbers. after the ball it is gray with black letter...says Mercury marine one it....cut a peice of it off and there was nothing in it. Looked good.

I am not much for mechanic, but were would I find the pulse pump and how do I open it up to see if there is anything wrong with it.

I had the boat in before I bought it and the compression was good on all the cylinders. Just wondering if plugs maybe would help to fix it?

    Rattler:

Please read through the following post again, and make sure that ALL items suggested have been addressed on your boat AT THE SAME TIME. They need to be done precisely as recommended (note recommended fuel line colors.... if yours don't match.... you know what you should do):

    http://www.bbcboards.net/zerot...first

As for the throttle question, let's see if we can get you to clarify something:

When your boat is in the water, in forward gear, and you want to take off- what do you operate to make it accelerate? A FOOT operated throttle, or a control handle throttle?

The speed of the boat is controlled by a throttle operated with your hand....
