I have a 1999 merc 4 stroke 25 hp. I want to change the oil. What kind of oil do I need and how much will it hold. Also if anyone can tell me what oil filter I need. Are there any tricks I should be aware of ? Thanks

Part# 822626Q06 oil filter.
25W40 Mercury/Quicksilver Oil is recommended (unless operating in freezing temperatures).
A decal should be visible atop the engine that lists the oil capacity (if not, your serial number is required to look that information up).![]()

Thanks. Can you give me a rough idea of how many quarts of oil to buy. I am helping a friend. It is his first boat. I have never changed the oil on a 4 stroke. I assume it is similar to changing a cars. Is there a generic type of oil or does it have to be mercury. Will say 10w 30 work? Also where will the drain plug be? Sorry I don't have the serial #. My friend has the boat. How often should he change the oil? Thanks for any tips
On average, most of the 25hp models will require 3-Quarts of oil to reach the appropriate oil level.
However.... it is best to refer to the decal on the engine for oil capacity (DO NOT overfill).
Utilize ONLY Marine-grade oils (do not use automotive oil, as they often do not provide that appropriate protection for your marine engine). Strongly recommend obtaining Mercury or Quicksilver oil in 25W40 (for use in temperatures above freezing).
Oil sump drain plug is located on the side of the engine (about 1/2 way down the driveshaft housing) on most models.
Engine oil should be changed Once per Year, or every 100 hours, whichever occurs FIRST.
