There are certainly issues with those coils. There is nothing you can do to prevent coil failure. These were faulty coils. Mercury will replace your coils if you have a failure. Even if only one coil fails, Mercury will replace all coils. Chances are, if you have the faulty coils on your motor, you would have already had a failure. Your local dealer can check your coils to see if they are the faulty coils or not. Not sure if they will replace them without a failure, but it is worth a call to Mercury to ask if you have the faulty ones on your motor. Hope that helps.
Thewrench Thanks for the info.
Although my motor is a 2008 it only has 72 hours on it. Do the coils (if bad) normally have issues before 100 hours? I have another year of warranty so i guess i shouldnt worry. Im just crazy that way. Thanks again!
Specific engine questions really require a "specific engine serial number".
SHOULD you experience an ignition coil failure (whether or not the engine is within warranty at the time)- take it to your Authorized Mercury Dealer, and ask them to reference SB 2009-026.![]()

I had one go out at about 3 years and 100 hours. Merc had the dealer replace all of them at that time, no issues in the last year
