I have a 2005 2 stroke Merc 50, tiller handle, electric start, power trim. Sometimes after it sets for a week or two, the starter does not work. I can hear an arcing noise when I turn the key, but the starter does not engage. I can usually turn it off and back on a couple of times, and it will start. Then it usually starts right up for the rest of the day. I can't find any loose connections or corroded connections. Any ideas? Thanks
Possibly a solenoid. The contacts inside may not be making a good connection until it is triggered a few times. Those things are cheaaaap. Turn the key, if u hear the arc but nothing happens, hold the key in the start position and tap on the solenoid with the back of a screwdriver. If it spins, change it out. Good luck

Also, check the battery cable connections INSIDE the cowling, as well as all wire connections for the solenoid (don't forget to check the black GROUND WIRE for the solenoid at BOTH ends of the wire).
