    1998 Mercury XR6 150hp bad cylinder

I have a chance to buy a buddies motor with a bad cylinder. It is a Mercury 150hp XR6 150hp. It has "one" bad cylinder that he says he shut it right down and thinks it could be probably re sleeved ?

Any idea of the cheapest best case scenerio if thats the case? I know it had low hrs, but has sat for 3 years with this bad cylinder.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated, maybe a worst case scenerio as well as far as costs.

    Thanks,

    Nick Neves

Its possible to bore it out and go with an oversized piston, major rebuild basically. Outboards generally don't use "sleeves" though.

The first question is what caused the failure? The cause may have affected more than one cylinder. Unless the cause is determined you won't know the best case repair cost. The engine needs a through inspection to determine the extend of any damage.

Unless the block is damaged the cylinder can be sleeved.

I personally have a 1984 carbed 200hp 2.4l that started life as a chrome bore block. Now only 2 are chrome bore as the other 4 are iron sleeves! It is expensive however. Going rate is around $240 a hole here in my neck of the woods!

+1... boring or resleeving are often options.

Teardown, inspection, and determination of the cause of the failure are needed.

Thank you guys for the answers. One last question, assuming my buddy is right and shut her right down. In a perfect world how minimum can my out of pocket be to get this thing running. Again assuming one cylinder was all that'd affected. And what is the worst possible? I know its speculation. Thanks again! - Nick

Can't really quote or estimate prices for other areas.

Best case- single cylinder (perhaps hone, new piston, rings in the others, bearings, seals and gaskets).

Worst case- replacement powerhead (block trashed).

Really need to have it torn down completely to KNOW what's going to need to be done.... not much sense in trying to "guess" different scenarios, as they likely don't apply.
