Opti 225 cooling problem - might have found the problem

    I need some guidance here.

The motor (Model 1-225D73FY, SN 1B387675) has been running great. One quirk was that after warmup and operation, occasionally and unpredictably at idle the temp would climb. If I saw it get to the 140's, I'd goose the throttle - a few 100 rpms for less than a second - and the temp would drop to normal for the circumstance, 105 to 125. Love that SmartCraft.

As part of annual maintenance, I replaced the impeller, plate, gaskets, and seal, which went easily and I believe correctly. I inspected the water flow passages at the low water pickup cavity, the poppet (the spring was lightly coated with carbon), the plastic screen, the thermostats (they tested ok), the fuel rail jacket, the compressor end cap vents (the compressor cylinder was nice and shiny), and the tell-tale tube and outlet. No debris, sand, or mud anywhere.

The first time on the lake with the new impeller, water pressure at idle was steady at 2 psi, but all was not well. Warmup was excessively slow. After a while at idle (I didn't time it, but I'd say 6 or 8 minutes) the temp gauge was steady in the low 100s. I put it in gear and accelerated a little and the temp immediately rose to about 125. I backed off the throttle and looked back and saw that there was no tell-tale flow (likely the t-stats hadn't opened). Just then the beeper sounded continuously, which I took to be the air compressor overheating. I haven't had the faults read to verify this. I killed the engine, waited about a minute, turned on the key and the beep resumed. I didn't think to check the temp gauge, so I don't know if the t-stats had opened. I loaded up under TM power, stowed eveything for travel, then turned the key on again - no beep this time.

After dicsussion with Don, a bad adaptor plate gasket seemed a real possibility, so I ordered the necessary parts. After removing the powerhead, I found the poppet carrier grommmet in the adaptor cavity behind the poppet. After a little testing, I found it possible to dislodge the carrier grommet with the poppet valve. My bad, I'm thinking. In this testing, I worked out how the poppet valve feels with the grommet in place and with it out of place.

Am I correct in deducing that the carrier being out of place would explain the long warmup time and the t-stats remaining closed, since water could flow easily at idle speed through the poppet valve? Then, with the t-stats closed and no water to the air compressor, accelerating (even briefly) would lead to a hot air compressor?

    Learning opportunities abound - LOL!!!

    Thanks,

    Frank

ps - when I re-install the carrier, what about "gluing" it in place with permatex or some such?

The GROMMET misplacement was likely the cause of your problem.

DO NOT attempt to "glue" the grommet to the carrier. Small imperfections in the amount of "glue" will almost certainly result in the poppet "hanging".

The Carrier (if removed) should be BRADDED into place with a punch (3-4 locations around the carrier).

OK, guess I'll just have to careful putting the poppet assembly back in from now on.
