2002 Opti 225 Smartcraft "Water in fuel" alarm (not audible) dilemma?

Been chasing this for about 3 weeks, New to me boat/motor. First trip - added 10 gallons to each tank (no additives) on the way to lake. About 2 miles out, observed the flashing "fuel" and "alarm" icons on the Smartcraft - returned back to ramp at mid-RPM.

First attempt to resolve after internet research, I disconnected the smartcraft sensor beneath the spin-on (not crown) fuel filter/water sperator. Poured the filter contents into clear container and drained for about an hour. After an hour, I couldn't see any water speration in the container so I reinstalled the filter. I added approriate amount of Quicklean, Stabil and Seafom to each tank and returned to lake. After launch, still had the flashing icons.

Second attempt: I just replaced the spin-on fuel filter/water sperator with new filter and threaded sensor (bottom of filter). Dumped the contents into another container for observation. Pumped bulb and put Opti on water muffs and started - still had flashing icons. Turned motor off, disconnected sensor connection and restarted - still had flashing icons. Reconnected sensor connection and turned ignition without starting the motor - icons still flashed?

I was informed that it takes several hours for the fuel to actually seperate so I'm going to wait until morning and examine the latest sample.

Help. How can I test the sensor or any other tips? Don't have a service manual yet.

    Thanks...

If you have a Water in Fuel warning with the wire DISCONNECTED from the filter, then SOMEWHERE in that wire's circuit there is a SHORT TO GROUND.
