I have a2002 optimax and I was wondering how important it is to run quickleen in the fuel? It is expensive and if is necessary are there any alternatives that are just as good? Thanks for the help.

Its really not that expensive as compared to the problems that can result from not running it. I use Don's cocktail minus the seafoam:
"Don's Favorite Cocktail" (IMO, this combination results in clean injectors, direct injectors and spark plugs):
-1oz Marine Stabil or Mercury QuickCare per 6 gallons fuel
-1oz Quickleen per 6 gallons fuel
-1-2oz SeaFoam per 6 gallons fuel
As the saying goes, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."
Theres only a few things we can control in the life of our motors and the few additives and maintenance procedures are some of them. I ran Ring Free in my Yamahas and now Quickcleen in my Merc, as well as the rest of Dons cocktail. This way if your motor does let loose on you, you cant say I woulda coulda shouda..... Our gasoline quality has really gone to chit over the years (though the price tag sure doesn't reflect it)

Instead of the Seafoam, I substitute Startron to assist/prevent the "evils of Ethanol". This combo works well in my Pro XB 250 EFI. Just another combo that I feel works. Hope that this helps.![]()

VERY important. Strongly recommended for use in EVERY SINGLE TANK OF FUEL, from the first tank consumed during break-in, to the last tank you pump in.
And this is NOT a new recommendation. It's covered in Service Bulletin 2001-12 (yes, it's been recommended since 2001!!!).

Take Don's warning if you don't run that in your motor every time you add gas you'll have that motor in the shop with a big,,, BIG!!!!!! bill for repair... I run quickleen and startron for the ethanol in the prescribed amounts everytime I add fuel....![]()

How does startron compare to quickleen or ring free?

Startron is a completely different product from Quickleen.
Quickleen is forumlated SPECIFICALLY to address carbon buildup in your engine.
One DOES NOT replace the other.

Don,
Did you receive any service bullitens last year that recommended cutting back on the use of quickleen?
I was told of such a bulletin last year. Rechecked again with the shop last week and was told that Mercury is still standing by this.

I know Don posted a while back that they said to use 1 oz of quickleen for 5 gals now, where it use to be 6 (due to the lousy gas we have now).
That is not cutting back, but actually increasing use....maye this shop you speak of read it wrong ?

-1oz Quickleen per 6 gallons fuel

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Mercury Component Cocktail" (Initial testing is indicating that this lends very similar results to the above cocktail):
-1oz Mercury QuickCare per 5 gallons fuel
-1oz Mercury QuickLeen per 5 gallons fuel
(If leaving fuel in boat for more than 30 days, be sure to also add Mercury QuickStor).

I would recommend that you ask the shop for the "Service Bulletin Number".
My guess.... they won't (or can't) provide it.![]()
I very regularly monitor new Service Bulletins- never seen any communication to this effect (and PLENTY of communication in the form of Bulletin, classroom instruction, and direction from Tech Support indicating EXACTLY the opposite).![]()

I'll give the shop a ring on monday and ask about the service bulletin.

Called the shop on monday and left a message, but have not heard back yet.
Did call Mercury... they said there was no such bulletin and to use quickleen the same way I always have.

Is there anywhere to get Quickleen in larger quantities than the small bottle? Or maybe by the case? The small bottle is around $15.00 at Bass Pro Shop.
2013 Phoenix 721 XP
2013 Mercury 250 Pro XS
Lowrance HDS Carbon 9 and HDS 9 gen 3
Twin 10' Talons
You can get it from Don (EuropeanAM) by the case.

Jim:
Not surprised you didn't get a callback on the non-existent bulletin.![]()

12oz bottles are currently the ONLY size available. $15 is a bit pricey, however.... we can certainly beat that price, even with ORMD shipping. Contact the parts department for ordering information:

I have some questions on the cocktail. Can you pre-mix this into a container and does it matter if you put it in before or after the gas
