    Hey Canon guys

I have 3 questions. I am shooting a 30d. I want to be able to change the exposure between pics. Do I have to be in a certain mode to do this? The problem I am having is I can hit the metering +/- button on the top lcd and use the big dial on back to change it but it wont save it where I stop. It will just go back to default.

Second question is about full manual mode. When I put the camera in full manual mode I can only adjust the iso and not the f stop. The top dial will adjust the iso but I cant find any button or dial that will change the f #. What am I doing wrong?

Last question is in the pic I posted above what is the Cfn in the box mean?
    Thanks guys

    Hi,
Don't have a 30D, but will help with what I can.

Use the "Menu" and select the function you wish to change thru that mode.
    That should "keep" your selections.

You can "Bracket" your exposures - 0 + and you will have three exposure photos to chose from. You may be able to select a one shot manual shutter release for each photo or a 3-shutter release burst, don't know what the 30D offers.

The "CFn" is Custom Function. Check your manual for the custom function selections the camera will allow. Your display shows you change your exposure, so that is why the "CFn" text is shown.

I'm sure others will be along to help more.

    Paul,
My first suggestion is going to be to reset the camera back to factory default. I believe you got it used so the old owner may have modified the dial settings. If you dont have the manual i would download it from canon as well as a reference. Once you are comfortable with the camera you can adjust the settings however you like.

To answer your questions about the dials im going to explain what the modes to and what the dials do in those modes(by default), this camera operates similar to my old 40d so im going off memory. Its similar to my 7d as well(the 7d has more buttons)

All of the modes here will let you adjust white balance, and metering mode.

Lets start with manual mode. Manual lets you set all three exposure parameters(ISO, Aperture(f-Stop), Shutter Speed). When you are in manual mode the dial by the shutter release will adjust the shutter speed, the dial on the back of the camera will adjust the aperture. To adjust the ISO you need to press the iso button on the top of the camera and then use the wheel by the shutter release.

Aperture Priority (AV on the dial). This mode will allow you to set two of the exposure parameters(ISO and Aperture) and let the camera decide the third. In this mode you set the ISO the same way as you do in manual and you can adjust the Aperture on the fly using the dial by the shutter release. The camera will decide the shutter speed to obtain correct exposure. If the shutter speed in the viewfinder blinks the camera cant get the right exposure and you need to adjust the ISO or Aperture. This mode is useful for maintaining constant depth of field if you have varying lighting conditions.

Shutter Priority (Tv on the dial) This mode will allow you to set two of the exposure parameters(ISO and Shutter Speed) and let the camera decide the third. In this mode you set the ISO the same way as you do in manual and you can adjust the Shutter speed on the fly using the dial by the shutter release. The camera will decide the Apreture to obtain correct exposure. If the Aperture setting in the viewfinder blinks the camera cant get the right exposure and you need to adjust the ISO or shutter speed. This mode is useful for when you want to maintain a set shutter speed ( sports are a good example) in varying light conditions.

The other thing you asked about it exposure compensation. That only works in Av and Tv Modes. What that does it it tells the camera to expose the photo's to whatever + or - stop you select instead of normal exposure. You adjust that with the big dial on the back when in those modes. If you are in manual it will jsut bounce back to center becase you set 100% of the parameters manually.

    Re: Hey Canon guys (jb882)

Thank you very much. I did buy the camera used and I didn't get the manual so I have only been going by what I can learn on the net. I will d/l the manual and start reading it. That was a very useful explination of each mode. I think you are right about some of the dials being changed. Thank you again.
