I'm still trying to figure out the settings to get the subject in focus like that with the background out of focus like you have it. Seems like it's the portrait setting?

I just had it set on Auto - just starting working on the other settings
Not sure what kind of body you're shooting with but, that "effect" is all related to depth of field (DOF) or bokeh and is adjusted by opening up your F setting (aperture).
For instance ... if your lens/camera can shoot at F2.8 will have less DOF than if you shot the same frame at F16.

Tom, right click on the photo on your pc and then right click properties, then click the tab details....and read what the camera settings were, f stop, exposure 1/??? sec, and ISO. post back what they were...it will also read if you had it on "automatic" or "AV" etc...
