    Anytime your shutter speed is over 1/20th of a second, a tripod absolutely makes a difference.

    HUGE difference, especially with a long lens. IS helps, but tripods are the way to go for slower shutter speeds. You might be able to get away with a shutter speed of 1/50 to 1/20 with a wide lens, but if you are using a long lens you're gonna need a tripod. For landscapes/nature and especially macro you really need a tripod in order to get tack sharp shots.
    On the flipside, if you aren't real concerned with graininess you can crank up your ISO to get a faster shutter speed. Occasionally I will use up to ISO 800, but beyond that I find the graininess rather unfavorable.
