    225X

Alright I know I posted this same thread in the mercury motors section but its not getting responses so I'm gonna post it here. Yeah I know we sort of discussed it in my "Is this a steal thread" but I want some more info on it. My question is how many of you guys run the 225X motor and how well do you like them? also anyone that has any other comments or info on them would be great. Thanks!

I have the same combo you are looking at, 2004 20xd/ 2004 225x. I bought mine new from Plapps by you when they were still in business. During break in I lost a coil on the #4 cylinder and that has been the only repair to my rig since other than normal maint.

It has been a very strong reliable engine and gets great fuel milage on that boat. The 225x is the newest version of the promax with motorola electronics and digital oil injection. The older promax motors you wanted to delete the oil injection system and mix your fuel but the x motor you don't want to do that. Don't know what lower is on the rig you are looking at but you do want low water pick ups to run to its potential.

If you have some questions send me an email. I don't know if you have rode in or drove that boat but I live about 2 miles from Bryants creek and about 10 minutes from Craigs creek. Be glad to show you how it performs when the river clears up some.

    Re: 225X (nkybassfisherman)

I bought my bullet last year with the 225x (02 model), at first I thought I was having issues with the performance of the motor, but after purchasing a service manual and getting a lot of feedback from the guys on here, I learned that it was just me not knowing. Since then I have had no issues on the performance of the motor @ 225 hrs. The only drawback I can think of is I do not believe it is designed for stop and go fishing, in the summer for sure. If I run for any distance on warmer days, I have to idle around for a few minutes before shuting it off. Do not know if other motors are the same, but I have not experienced it with my buddies efi motor. Anyway, I like it for what it is worth.

What do you consider distance? And what does the motor do if you dont idle around for a minute after a run?

    Re: 225X (nkybassfisherman)

If I make a single run five miles or longer and come off plane, the temp will rise up to about 140 -145 and thats fine if I am going to be fishing there for 30 minutes or longer. but if I shut it down at that temp and 10 minutes later I make another run of 1 mile and come off plane the temp will go up to about 150. the more I stop and go without letting the motor get back down to about 125, the higher the temp will go up. I found this out by running and shuting down about 5 times and didn't stay long at each site, on the last spot I cranked up and the temp alarm went off at 170 (this was in the middle of the summer). Have not had any issues since I idle around for a few minutes after coming off plane. Depending on the air temp and water temp I could idle for 1 minute or 3-4 minutes.

They don't all have cooling system issues that need to be fixed. One of the best motors ever IMO.

Good thing about BBC...all comments are welcome and have no issues with cooling system, but there is a big difference in CT and Al. Like I said earlier I like the 225X.

    Re: 225X (Just Tom)

I owned one for about 5 years from new, and now my son has one. They are great, strong motors. The only issues either of us had were the motor mounts went bad on both of them with relatively few hours, and some rubber grommets deteriorated on mine after I sold it to another guy. These were back in around the reeds and from Merc, like most things, they were going to be around 26 dollars a piece and 6 were needed. The deterioration may have been ethanol fuel related.

I dont care what make or model a outboard is they all have to cool down at idle for 2 or more minutes after a run or they will blow up. Just ask the Don.
