How do I tell what temp thermostats I need for my 250 efi 3.0l
The ones I took out are stamped 143 on the end that goes in the head.

That would indicate that the ones you removed are 143 degree thermostats.
Proper identification of parts is achieved with the ENGINE SERIAL NUMBER (you can even look them up yourself at: http://www.europeanmarine.org under parts and accessories/mercury parts).![]()

wish i had the engine serial number as it would make working on it a lot less difficult.
If the sticker came off, I think it is also stamped somwhere on the block?![]()
Here in Texas, the serial number is on the motor title![]()
Keith
No titles on the engine here in Michigan.
You SHOULD have a white or gray sticker on the STARBOARD (right) side of the swivel bracket.
There would also be a serial number somewhere on the powerhead- more than likely, it's stamped into a 1" aluminum "welch plug" on the powerhead.
If that fails..... drop me an email with some pictures of the powerhead (from various angles), and I'll be glad to try and identify it. Email address is in my profile (<<<<<----------- to the left).![]()

Seriel number is stamped on block where the 2 halves meet on the port (passenger) side near the top.
Richard
I looked on the port side but did not see it.

I have a 250EFI also...look on the starboard side and as Don said...there should be a 1" or so aluminum plug in the block about in the middle with the serial number stamped in it. That's where mine is at. It could have been painted over. It will be about 1" in diameter and about 5/8" deep. Same spot you have the picture at, but on the starboard side.

Your engine does indeed use 143 degree thermostats.
I've IM'ed you some information to use for "future parts identification needs".![]()
