My buddies SX 170 is only rated for max people 3 or 400lbs. His 14 ft john boat is rated for 4? Is that the state law or a recommendation? 3 seems awful low.

How many seats does a SX-170 have? That might be your answer. Also, bass boats normally carry their passengers in toward the rear. If you put too many, water might come over the transom when you slow down.

According to the LA boater safety manual, the plate itself is a recommendation for safe loading, but there is a section that states...
"Louisiana law states that these dangerous operating practices are illegal."
Overloading is loading the vessel beyond its safe carrying capacity, taking into consideration the weather and other operating conditions.
Now, it doesn't specifically state that loading heavier than the plate is a violation, so take this for what it's worth.
There is another section of the manual that says this.....
On vessels with no capacity plate, use the following rule of thumb to calculate the number of persons (weighing 150 lbs. each, on average) the vessel can carry safely in good weather conditions.
Number of people =
vessel length (ft.) x vessel width (ft.)
--------------------------------------------
15
For example, for a vessel 18 feet long by 6 feet wide, the number of persons is 18 times 6 (or 108) divided by 15, which equals seven 150-lb. persons (or a total person weight of 7 x 150, or 1050 lbs.).
Sounds like his plate needs to disappear then.

wlf can and will right tickets for over the limit on persons and or weight when they so choose!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Dont take the plate off then its hard to sell and harder to insure. Not sure but there may be laws against that too

Whats the weight limit for the Jon boat ?
should be a plate on it if it is a factory built boat
Coast gaurd doesnt rate the boats the mfg. does using a set of guidelines. Some maufacters go lighter than they could due to liability reasons.

I hear ya, and don't doubt that they would write the ticket... BUT.....
If you get a ticket and fight it, you would win, because NOWHERE in the Louisiana revised statutes does it say that the Coast Guard plate is what is used to rate what is "safe".
All it says is "No watercraft shall be loaded with passengers or cargo beyond its safe carrying capacity taking into consideration weather and other existing operating conditions." (LA RS 34:851.11)... AND .... this statute doesn't even have a punishment following it the way that most laws do.
I had an Sx 176 5yrs ago and got stopped by a GW with 6people in the boat! We had 6 life jackets out, and i wasnt drinking so he said yall be carefull and we drove off!
