Is this the big news?
http://www.bbcboards.net...-show
That's the problem with rumors..... but perhaps those rumors will spark something in the future.
For those that missed it, Mercury Racing unveiled their 1300 & 1350 Twin-Turbo QC4V 9 Liter Racing Sterndrive package.
For the offshore/Sterndrive market, it will certainly be an exciting addition to their current engine lineup!
This package will run 91 octane fuel, and sports a newly designed transmission, a newly designed "M8 High Performance Sterndrive", and a full line of newly designed Cleaver-style propellers.
Additional products for the Production Outboard line include the 115 ProXS (already available), and a new 150 ProXS (which shares many of the features of the current 175 ProXS, including a 3-star emissions rating).
This latest ProXS addition rounds out Mercury's ProXS Lineup, which now includes the 115, 150, 175, 200, 225 and 250 models, targeted specifically and the bass, walleye, and center console boat industries.
Mercury Marine will also be receiving an innovation award for their "Eco" Mercmonitor (unveiled at last year's Miami Boat Show, and now available).

Well, thats cool and all. But if thats it, then there really wans't anything new unvield for High Performance OUTBOARD motors which is the hope every year for the HP boater. I think that was the complaint.![]()
Now for the blue boat inboard crowd, this sounds like the YEAR for them!Wow....twin turbo's

Sure would be nice to see a 4.0 liter V-8 Optimax.... or even a 4.2L stroker!![]()

I agree Don, that would be totally sweet to see, a big stroker from Merc![]()

DFI or 4 Stroke Don? Unless they go to 8 cylinders how are they going to keep it together at higher RPM's ? @ 3.2 they are stretching it given piston speed limits etc so how is that going to work at even a longer stroke?![]()

Yea. And I want all of that stuff on a 15" mid and have it weigh 350lbs. Am I asking for too much????![]()

If Dave Bush won't exceed 3.3 L in displacement on 6 cylinders it would take something that isn't even feasible or capable of fitting in any existing block to get to 4.2 L and a short enough stroke.
IMO from talking to Redline and looking at his piston speed charts the ONLY way to get a high RPM reliable motor ( 7000+ RPM's) at 4.2 L of displacement is to get it from an added 2 cylinders, it would be the only way to keep the stroke short enough to not exceed maximum piston speeds.
Red if your reading just for laughs what would you calculate the maximum piston speed to be for a 4.2 L V6 motor assuming given existing bore sizes? I believe you said that given existing metal technologies if the same grade parts ( Forged lightweight Pistons, wrist pins, rods, bearings, balanced rotating assemblies etc etc were used) that are found in the best 2.5 L 300 Drag type 10000 RPM motors and then these parts were used in just a 3 L motor that the longer stroke would equate into a maximum piston speed of 7400 RPM's and that is ONLY IF all these UNAVAILABLE parts were used.
SO if one used such parts at 4.2L what would be the maximum piston speed be? I'm betting it would be not much over 6,000 RPM's assuming you have a 400 HP motor and use 1.62 gears your going to need a 38" or 40" prop to keep it at or under 6,000 RPMs on a high perf boat never mind a real light drag hull![]()

S&F isn't the only thing monitored by "Mother Merc".![]()
We have several members here on BBC that are also from FDL, Wisconsin (as well as a few folks there that simply watch to see what's going on).![]()
Eli: Just as a matter of "basics".... adding two cylinders, and running the same RPM's won't affect piston speed (since you'd essentially be maintaining the same bore and stroke, and just adding two new cylinders).![]()
The added displacement would certainly make for a real "beast", however....![]()

Don: Maybe I wasn't clear, I think the only way to get a displacement of 4.2 L and keep RPM's in the even existing 6800 to 7000 limit with present metal technologies IS TO INEED go to a V8 design.
I'm just wondering at 4.2 L of displacement on a V6 design what the calculation for maximum piston speed would be? I'm betting it would be very low for a Hi perf motor?

That would depend on whether all of the additional displacement came from the BORE, or a change in the STROKE.![]()

And if it all came frm the bore, while piston speed would be the same, port area would only = 70.7% of the voulme increase, thus lowering the RPMs, thus lowering the HP output. The problem with 2 strokes is volume displacement increases per cylinder exceed the breathing capability.
