    Spark plugs

Good morning Don. I'm new to BBC and i'm already glad I joined. I recently purchased a 2003 NITRO 929 with an 03 225 EFI, 25p Tempest Plus Prop. I was told by local Marine mechanic to use NGK BR8HS plugs with a .35 gap. I feel The boat should be going faster than 63 mph at 5300 RPM. I just read one of you posts and it stated to use only the recommended Champion QL77CC plugs. The Motor had 490 hrs on it when i bought and I want to take care of it and make it last. I guess my question is could not using the recommended plugs cause a performance issue? Was also thinking og upgrading props to a Fury. Thanks

    Re: Spark plugs (bredmo62)

    Welcome to BBC!

(CHAMPION) QL77CC is the "Recommended" Spark plug for your application. I would plan to replace them prior to searching further for appropriate RPMS.... I've seen "other spark plugs" cause a wide array of problems, ranging from poor performance to BLOWN FUSES and ECM problems.

While you're at this, might be a good idea to confirm good CLEAN SPARK on ALL SIX plug wires with a spark tester. Some find it easier to simply utilize a timing light- connect the inductive pickup lead to one plug wire at a time while the engine is running... and watch for the light to flash.

If all is well here, you may want to consider looking at your prop/setup to get the engine up into it's recommended RPM range.
