A sticking OPEN thermostat will cause a RICH running condition.

A sticking CLOSED Thermostat will cause an OVERHEATING condition.

One other thing.... if you're seeing your RPM's jump around, especially without any "perceivable" RPM change: and ESPECIALLY if you notice an occassional "elevated idle", TRY CHANGING THE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR.

I've run across a couple of them that look good: test good: but mysteriously problems "ceased" when it was replaced.
